Beginning February 12, Venezuelan students began protesting for the right to protected freedom of speech, end to goods and shortages, and better security. All around Venezuela these protests received attention. The protests started to get attention from people all over the world when three students were killed.
Protesters uploaded footage of the violence on CNN’s iReport depicting the clashes between students and police officers. It has been estimated that ten people have died and 137 have been wounded from these demonstrations.
On Twitter, #PrayForVenezuela has become a very prominent hasthtag attached with various pictures and videos showing the violence and tweets demanding peace and an end to the corruption happening.
Leopoldo LĂłpez, the protest leader who has been jailed, urges citizens to continue to protest for their rights and even wrote, “To the youth, to the protesters, I ask you to stay firm against violence, and to stay organised and disciplined. This is everyone’s struggle.”
