The Surprising Trends of New York Fashion Week

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Arkansas chapter.

It occurs twice a year in one of the busiest cities in the world and it is one of the biggest fashion events. New York Fashion Week is when we see what fashion designers have been concocting in their studios come to life. More people rush to the already heavily populated city to see the art displayed on models. From the chaotic backstage of the shows to the glamorous after parties, New York Fashion Week is very vital to the fashion industry. Many of the outfits on runaway may seem over-the-top, but they simply inspire the trends we see every day in stores. I think it is possible to incorporate the styles from the runway into your everyday attire.  My personal favorite looks on the runway for the fall season and this upcoming spring season are oversized coats, cowboy hats, fur, and the color orange.

Marc Jacobs

Oversized Coats:

First off, over-sized coats will be a necessity for this fall. Kim Kardashian has been sporting oversized coats during this cold season and it looks amazing.  Not only will an oversized coat keep you warm, it will ensure that you will be in ultimate style.

Michael Kors

Keep the fur:

Fur is staying, but it is taking a turn. More vibrant colored furs are being incorporated into outfits. Fur jackets are amazing because it can turn a simple outfit into a bold combination. Even fur clutches and purses are making an appearance into fashion.

Cowboy Hats:

Yes this southern classic is in and surprisingly very chic. The designers of Cushnie et Ochs paired a cowboy hat with a sleek black dress and black booties. This made the normally bulky hat look very feminine and sexy. I think this trend should flourish because it can add a lot of character to an outfit and southern character at that.

My favorite trend is…..

Orange is the New Black:

And I am not talking about the extremely popular show on Netflix, but the actual color. Orange was appearing up and down the runway for the 2014 Spring/Summer collections and even for the 2014 Autumn/Winter collections. Whether the orange was a dress or a pair of shoes, the color is going to shine bright this spring. Designers even integrated orange as a beauty essential. So many models were rocking a bold orange lip color or their cheeks were lightly covered in orange blush. This color is going to flourish throughout the year.

These trends may seem out there or not quite your style, but they can be attainable. There is nothing better than being creative with your style and being a trend setter on campus.  If you are feeling daring and looking for excitement with your wardrobe, maybe try these trends!
