To the readers who came to our Charity Show “Catwalk for the Cure” in January, the name Jenn Hayward is familiar. She was the one to host the event. This time she will be starring in her own stand-up comedy show called “Jesus Even Loves a Crazy Horny Feminist”. Jenn was born and raised in Saskatoon, but has lived and performed in Ottawa since 2007. At the age of 38, she wrote her first show “Jesus Loves a Crazy Horny Feminist.” She is currently on tour with the second version of the show all about spirituality, mental health, feminism and sex. I had the chance to have a quick talk with her so she could give us some details on this show.
HC: What is “Jesus Even Loves a Crazy Horny Feminist” about?
Jenn: The first thing I have to say is that the show is autobiographic. It’s about a woman who suffered from personality disorder, so she is trying to find herself after all she’s been through. This quest of finding who she really is will happen while having a conversation with God. I don’t want to say more, because I don’t want to reveal anything important or surprising.
HC: How much are people going to be shocked when they come to the show?
Jenn: Oh, people will be shocked when they see the show. They have to be prepared to be offended. However, they have to be open minded because I will be talking about important matters for women. Also, just by the title of my show, it’s an indication about what you will be “dealing” with all night.
HC: Which important issues for women will you be talking about?
Jenn: We can call it a “feminist” show, so it will make references to infertility, abortion and others topics related only to female issues.
HC: Does your show attract men as well?
Jenn: I want to say that it’s pretty even, but indeed more women come to the show.
HC: Can we expect to see a younger audience or a more mature audience during those nights?
Jenn: The show is definitely for more mature adults because of all the content that it will be talking about. Also, a mature audience will better understand the humour behind everything I am saying. It’s a show for people older than 16.
HC: What is the difference between this show and the first version you did?
Jenn: Earlier this year I did the show “Jesus Loves a Crazy Horny Feminist”. It was a “draft” on the show I am presenting right now. I wanted to test the water and see how the audience would react. We had a good reaction so we decide to start a tour. There aren’t a lot of changes between the versions. Some of my Catholic friends came to see the show and have only good feedback to give me.
HC: What are the cities you will be performing in?
Jenn: I will be in Ottawa, Toronto and Montreal. More dates and locations will be scheduled for the tour; it’s just hard to plan really in advance since I am a mother.
HC: Do you have any final comments you want to give to the readers?
Jenn: Mental health is a subject real close to my heart so this show is a good way to talk about and maybe bring awareness to this important and serious topic.
Jenn Hayward will be performing at the Ottawa Arts Court from March 3rd until March 5th at 8pm. To purchase tickets and learn more about the event visit the show’s website.
