Interview Must-Haves From Kate Spade and J.Crew

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Columbia Barnard chapter.

Here at Her Campus Barnard, we value looking perky and put-together while trying to impress those controlling higher powers called job recruiters in a way that seems genuine and expressive (paradox much?) When you’re invited in for the highly coveted in-person job or internship interview for your dream position, it’s more comforting to rehearse those behavioral scenarios than nervously sift through your tiny collegiette closet where there’s little immunity to piles and wrinkles. However, an ordinary/repetitive chat about your “skill set” and “career goals” will stand out from the rest with the help of two loyal old friends, Kate Spade and Ms. J.Crew. Keep reading on for our top must-haves to steal the (job-searching) show and exude equal parts confidence and grace!

“Bow” Down To Me

In the Journal of Societal Research on Jewelry Designs, a 2012 study reveals “wearing bows subtly increases professional likeability.*” In our humble opinion, they’re just adorable, ultra-feminine, and seem to characterize a crafty, upbeat personality.

The “Jackie”  (Kennedy Would Approve) Tuxedo Pant

I know what you’re thinking…why on earth would I pay $150+ for a simple pair of trousers?  I get it – there must be a thousand more affordable versions that look like Jackie’s identical twin. Well, the reality is you will have many interviews to go on and have the chance to wear the same sharp classy thing over and over, so why not make it straight-legged fluffy cotton? And look at that fun satin trim! A set of these beauties will truly be your best friend forever, and will display your willingness to adapt to a true professional wardrobe,** before you’ve even landed a spot in that world.

Flatiron Nylon Maryanne Tote

Add a little spunk and energy to your step if your outfit is veering toward the monochrome. This bag is perfect to swing over your shoulder and safely carry your folder of resumes, contact information and apple ticktacks through the concrete jungle. Its design looks like a splattering of NYC lights!

“Linen City” Mini

When the weather warms up in four months (just kidding), you’ll want to embrace the freedom of sunny days without sacrificing material appropriateness. With this cleverly-rhymed “linen city mini” skirt, you can tuck in a silk blouse or feature an open cardigan. The pleated waist ensures a comfortable fit and won’t have you playing with a stubborn zipper!

Emma Seuede Ballet Flats

In hues such as “pale thistle” beige and “vintage rosewood” red, this soft staple will accompany you on your hurried, anxious walk into that unfamiliar building and radiate understated sophistication.

Chanel Style Crepe Dress

Ahhh, the timeless LBD (or Little Black Dress, for those fashionistas living under a rock.) In J.Crew’s elegant rendition of this signature item, ambitious collegiettes can focus on ensemble-assembling a little less and keep their eyes on the prize. Just make sure to wear a statement necklace or decorative hairband to complete your look!

Best of luck on your job hunt, collegiettes…we’re always here for you!

*This study isn’t real, but it should be :)

**Some industries and office environments will accept more creative and/or casual day-to-day appearances, but nice work pants are ALWAYS a safe bet for interviews
