5. Watching the Classics on VHS
When I was a kid, not a day went by that I didn’t struggle to use a VHS tape to watch a movie. I could never remember which end went in first. To this day, I still remember the introduction sequence which announced what was ‘Coming Soon to Video and DVD.’
4. Windows 98
My parents preferred PC to Mac when I was growing up, so I learned from an early age that I should never expect technology to ever do what I want it to.
3. Scholastic Book Fair
If I’m being honest, the Scholastic Book Fair was the only the thing that got me through elementary school. The ability to buy all the books about cats I wanted was power that rested in my hands for two days each year, and I used it well.
2. Light-Up Shoes
The first time my parents ever dropped some cash on light-up shoes was the first time I truly understood the value of the dollar. Any kid who walked into elementary school with a glowing entourage on their feet was immediately the coolest kid in school for the the day.

Kool-Aid bursts were my lifeblood back in the day. Anyone who was lucky enough to have parents who ignored the risk of diabetes was a valuable part of the lunch table.
