If you’re looking for something to do in Richmond and want to branch off campus, Carytown just might be the place you’ve been looking for. Located uptown on Cary Street, Carytown houses a great deal of food and leisure based activities perfect for a weekend outing. If you have a car the drive is about ten minutes depending on traffic and walking takes about thirty minutes. I promise, the walk goes by quickly and is totally worth it. So without further ado, here are eight things to check out in Carytown.
1. Bev’s Homemade Ice Cream (2911 W. Cary St, Richmond, VA 23221)
This ice cream is amazing. Bev’s has an array of delicious flavors including Espresso Oreo, Raspberry Chocolate Chip and many more.
2. The Byrd Theatre (2908 W. Cary St, Richmond, VA 23221)
A classic movie theatre, The Byrd shows what they call second run movies for $2. Not only is The Byrd an affordable way to see movies that have recently been in theatres. It is also an experience due to the beautiful architecture inside.
3. Chop Suey Books (2913 W. Cary St, Richmond, VA 23221)
Selling primarily used books, but featuring several new releases, Chop Suey is a great place to find a good read for a good price. The store also has its own cat that is often seen napping on a bookshelf or walking around the front desk.
4. Plan 9 Music (3017 W. Cary St, Richmond, VA 23221)
Featuring a wonderful collection of CDs, tape cassettes and vinyl’s, Plan 9 is a great place to go for any music enthusiasts. The store has a 90s indie movie vibe and a great selection of music ranging from jazz to rock to rap.
5. Ashby (3010 W. Cary St, Richmond, VA 23221)
Titled as thrift and consignment clothing store, Ashby is a good place to go for anyone interested in clothing that is in good condition. They also have a sister store Clementine that is right down the road.
6. Carytown Burgers & Fries (3500 ½ W. Cary St, Richmond, VA 23221)
If you want a good burger this is the place to go, but just be prepared to eat a lot. This place not only has burgers, but also chicken, sandwiches and vegetarian options.
7. Mongrel (2924 W. Cary St, Richmond, VA 23221)
Cute knick knacks and quirky gifts fill the shelves of this store. This is the place to go if you have some extra spending money or are looking for a good present for a friend or roommate.
8. Dixie Donuts (2901 W. Cary St, Richmond, VA 23221)
So you many have noticed a food trend in this list — this is because Carytown is 60 percent food, and it’s almost all delicious. Dixie Donuts has a great list of donuts for a reasonable price.
