HCX Travel: The New Holiday Craze – Glamping

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Exeter chapter.

We have all experienced the rainy camping holiday in Britain. It promised to be the perfect family getaway and yet was a miserable mix of mud, leaky tents and a basic, communal shower block. On the other hand, many urban hotels often lack character and are not always surrounded by the beautiful scenery you would hope to find on holiday. The solution has been found…

In recent years, there has been a huge rise in glamping holidays. These sites aim to provide the perfect country getaway for couples or families, often in woodlands or meadows with beautiful views. Glamping accommodation could include a Mongolian yurt, a traditional shepherds hut, a spacious safari tent, a Scandinavian wooden pod, or even a spectacular treehouse. This is the sort of holiday where you can sit around a campfire with wine and toasted marshmallows, go for long country walks and watch the stars. There are many, many glamping sites in Britain, so if you are looking for a brief getaway that you can drive to, going glamorous camping is a fantastic way to experience different parts of the amazing British countryside.

The Hobbit House

Although located in Cornwall, this circular roundhouse is straight out of Tolkein.  The cosy wooden house is topped with grass and forget-me-nots and is set in a traditional West Country orchard, which grows apples, pears and wild berries. Inside you will find sheepskin rugs and stained glass windows made from gin bottles! There are woodland courses like bushcraft for you to try, and a sandy beach is only a few minutes away.

Vintage Vardos

This trio of vintage gyspy wagons is close to Exeter – they are set in a Devon meadow on the edge of a wood. The interior is decorated in colourful patterns and fits a double bed and even two extra bunks. In the mornings, you can wake up to a sizzling breakfast on a campfire and explore the local area in the afternoons.

The Wild-de-go

This 1920s Cornish boat was supposedly bought by its owners for two hundred and fifty gold coins. It now sits in a secret country garden and is a wonderful place to spend a few nights. Grass grows on the roof and there is a private wooden hot tub right next to it. You can even take a little boat out onto the nearby duck pond. This boat has unique charm that makes it a top glamping site.

Mundays Meadow

In an ancient wildflower meadow in the Cotswolds are three lotus bell-tents. This glamping site is a beautiful place to stay. You sleep on cosy futon beds decorated with hand-made cushions. It is both rustic and luxurious; you can cook dinner on a campfire and drink wine in the cosy candlelight. So if you want to travel a bit further north, this is the perfect glamping getaway.

If you are looking for a unique few days away, in a yurt or a treehouse, in the country or by the sea, glamping is a fantastic new holiday to try.
