Sarah Engstrand: Cancer Awareness Day Founder

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at St. Andrews chapter.

While we here at Her Campus know Sarah Engstrand (4th Year – English) as an excellent writer and long term team member, she is also busy doing many other things. Most recently, she has set up the St Andrews Cancer Awareness Day for this Thursday, April 3rd

Sarah describes Cancer Awareness Day as a day for the St Andrews Community (town and gown) to wear a tartan ribbon, making visible the number of people that have been affected by cancer. The ribbon should open up the doors to talk about cancer, and be a reminder that those suffering and their families are not alone. Talking about cancer was one of the hardest parts about dealing with her mom’s battle with the disease, said Sarah. She wants the ribbon to be a reminder that many people have experienced a similar situation, and will understand what you are going through.

She chose April 3rd ‘because it is the one year anniversary of my mom’s death.’ Sarah wanted to remember her in a positive way and use her personal experiences to help others. The money raised from the sale of the ribbons and raffle tickets will go straight back to the local community in the form of baskets for families dealing with cancer. The baskets will contain necessities, like meal vouchers, petrol vouchers, etc, as well as a few fun things. The committee is partnering with Maggie’s Cancer Center to make sure the baskets reach those with the most need.

So now you’re asking yourself how you can get involved. First off, buy a ribbon – whether you have personal experience with the disease or just want to support those going through it. Next, buy a raffle ticket or two! The prizes are great and they are only a pound. You can find the committee selling ribbons outside the library and in halls, check the facebook page for up to date information on where they are. http://www.hercampus.com/school/st-andrews/st-andrew-cancer-awareness-day

Quick Fire:

Why Tartan? All of the different types of cancer have a specific color so we chose tartan to be all encompassing! It stands out, but it isn’t too in your face.

What was the best thing about organizing an event? People from all over got involved, townspeople, students, and university staff have all been amazing. We also got some amazing sponsorship from the businesses in town, and have had donations from all over! I really want everyone to know what an amazing committee I’ve had. Make sure to put that in there!

Thanks for your time, Sarah, and we urge everyone to get involved in this effort to provide support for the local families!
