Mission Creek Festival has more than just music

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Iowa chapter.

I’m sure most of you have heard about the amazing Mission Creek Festival that took place in downtown Iowa City the first week of April for the ninth year in a row. The festival is most well known for its wide array of music performances held around town at local venues, including but not limited to: Blue Moose Taphouse, The Mill, Gabe’s, Yacht Club, and many more. What you may not have known about the festival, however, is that it also has an impressive literary program, as well!

It’s called the Mission Creek Literary Program. The program included literary readings from many talented writers, many of which attended The University of Iowa’s very own Writer’s Workshop. The readings were held at different locations around town including one of Iowa City’s most popular literary venues: Prairie Lights Bookstore. The program began Tuesday, April 1st, with readings by Leslie Jamison and Adam Fell—two incredible writers and graduates from the Writer’s Workshop—and will finish Sunday, April 6th, with Was The Word, a performance of charismatic storytellers and poets held at The Englert Theatre. The program also presented the 5th Annual Small Press and Literary Magazine Book Fair at The Mill on Saturday, where book connoisseurs could stock up with quality reading from cities across the Midwest that will provide their reading for the rest of the year!

So if you’re interested in attending some remarkable literary readings, make sure you keep an eye out for the Mission Creek Literary Program at the tenth Mission Creek Festival next spring!

My name is Jess. I'm a senior here at the University of Iowa where I am currently studying as an English major. I love all things related to writing, music, and spending time with the people who mean the most to me. I am currently interning for Iowa City UNESCO City of Literature as a Marketing intern. Someday, I hope to work as an editor or proofreader in a publishing house.
