What Happens When You Have Mono in College

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

It’s already hard enough to balance school,  extracurriculars, your social life, and sleep in college. Add mono into this equation and it’s nearly impossible. Here are the stages you go through as a college student with mono.

You wake up one morning, and getting up just doesn’t seem like an option.

So you go back to sleep without setting an alarm, and when you finally wake up you realize you’ve slept 13 hours. Your throat is so swollen and painful, your body is sore, you have the chills, and your fever is at 104.

So you attempt homework for a bit, but then end up watching Netflix and falling asleep (again).

You stay in bed for the next few days before finally giving in and going to the infirmary.

They take your blood and swab your throat (in case it’s strep) and make you stay in there for a few hours.

Two days later, you go back to the infirmary and they tell you that your mono test is positive.

When it becomes public knowledge, everyone asks whom you’ve been making out with and some get anxious about if they’ve shared a drink with you or not.

You go to class—since you’ve already missed too many days—but you’re lucky if you stay awake for more than half of it.

You lie around in your bed all day, with a “great” excuse not to go to the Plex or to get your own food from Lower.

Finally, you start feeling like yourself again, and it’s amazing.

So to reassure all you Collegiettes who hear about how college dorms are breeding grounds for mono, just remember: don’t worry, everything passes eventually. Even mono.
