Want a Career in Media? Bookmark These Websites

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Drexel chapter.

I can’t claim to be an expert on careers in media as, like our readers, I am merely an unemployed undergrad. With two Co-ops at print magazines under my belt and one more just beginning though, I will say I’ve learned a few things. For instance, there are some websites that professionals in media read religiously. They talk about the best in industry news, job listings, and trends in print and digital media. Whether you’re looking for a job in magazines, online writing, publishing, advertising, or public relations, the following sites will keep you in the know. Follow them on Twitter to be even more up to date!

Mediabistro (@mediabistro)

This is the top media news and industry job website for professionals and hopefuls alike. Their news is broken down into Social Media, Advertising & PR, TV & Video, Publishing, Design, & Tech. In addition to news, they also have a ton of job listings and features like their Resume Revamp service and the Freelance Marketplace. For post-graduation development, Mediabistro also has educational workshops and courses in media like Fashion Writing and Web Analytics, both online and on location. They also have their Fishbowl blogs that have in-depth coverage of scenes in New York, Washington D.C. and L.A. Essentially, they’re your one-stop-show for media growth and news.

Ed2010 (@ed2010news)

Chandra Turner began this site (pronounced “Ed Twenty-Ten”)  in 1996 when she was a former ASME intern moving to New York to pursue her magazine dream job. Now Ed2010 is the go-to spot for magazine internship listings (organized by Paid and Unpaid) as well as real, live full-time job postings! Ed occasionally has events for interns, young editors, and panels with more experienced editors to give us all some advice. Ed also has a mentor system and chapters on college campuses. They do pretty cheap “resume makeovers” and small scholarships called the Trust Fund, too!

FOLIO:  (@foliomag)

As a key resource for magazine and online industry news, the audience of Folio: is industry professionals. Like many of the other sites on this list, Folio has a job board and resources for learning more about publishing but it also features blogs by professionals in varied subjects like Audience Development and Production, as well as blogs by consumers. In addition to resources for careerists, Folio: also has resources for businesses looking to expand their brand, a must for the length of a media career, not just those looking for a job.

AdWeek (@adweek)

I’m sure from the title you can guess that this site is about advertising. As media is reliant on advertising, sites like AdWeek that supply the industry with news on ads, what’s working and what’s not working for brands, and audience analysis are crucial. Hit up this site to learn more about what brands are associated with what advertisers, how audience, advertising, and publishing interact, and more. They also frequently have fun pieces that apply marketing to society in a larger context

Poynter (@poynter)

Created by Nelson Poynter, a newspaper publisher from Florirda, Poynter continues to serve his mission of allowing quality journalism to help communities and democracy thrive. If you’re looking for tips & tricks from leading journalism professionals, Poynter is the place to go. The web home of the Poynter Institute, a journalism school in St. Petersburg, FL, their online presence provides webinars and self-serve courses for those interested in learning more about democratic journalism. Poynter teaches students at all levels and teachers themselves in person as well. Poynter also has media news in addition to their many training resources.

MinOnline (@minonline)

The glossy sister site of Folio:, MinOnline provides industry news, like many on this list, but it also serves as a gossip-y hub for that same news. Industry leaders come here for their newsletter subscriptions, multiple platforms for consumer mags and Business-to-Business publications, and their awards and events. They, too, have a job board and online webinars. Checking this site along with the others on this list for any news and job postings will surely get you ahead of the pack after graduation.
