More Than Just A Horoscope in the Daily Paper

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UW Stout chapter.

When many think of astrology, they typically associate it with horoscopes, zodiac or sun signs, tarot cards and analyzing the year to come. Many, if not most, do not think of the planets or what one’s sun sign really represents. Many also don’t think of astrology as a tool of reflection or guidance either. These people didn’t sit down with Minneapolis astrologer, Adam Wolter.

Wolter is an evolutionary astrologer who began his studies at the age of 20 after meeting an old man on a nude beach. “He had a big white beard, wizard glasses, a little sun hat,” said Wolter. “He told me, ‘you’re not your sun sign:’” something Wolter didn’t take seriously.

Originally a skeptic, Wolter quickly sparked an interest in astrology. He continued to meet with the man, Joe, whom he considers his first teacher – this time clothed, of course. “I got into yoga and meditation…hitchhiking and going into the woods alone – trying to find what’s the truth,” says Wolter.

Wolter says that after viewing his astrological birth chart – a chart showing the planets’ position at one’s birth – he started watching the movements of the planets of his chart. “The times when the moon, Mercury and Venus…would go across these points in my chart, I would watch the reflection in my life exactly,” explains Wolter.

Three years earlier, at age 17, Wolter was in a car accident that left him in a coma for four months, and a victim of short-term memory loss for another year after that.

A few months into studying with Joe, Wolter finally saw the power of astrology. He looked at a bi-wheel comparison chart of his car accident to his birth chart and never looked back.

“[I] saw in that chart the Star of David on top of Pluto, opposite to my Mars…and then the sun was conjunct with Uranus in Aquarius, opposite to my Mercury and then Saturn and Mars completed the point.”

For non-astrologers, this sun and planet alignment may not make sense.  But as one decodes the Astrology terminology, they can see the relation to Wolter’s astrological chart and the car accident.

According to Wolter, “Pluto is the planet of transformation, death and rebirth,” which relates to the coma that Wolter suffered. “Mars is the planet of cars, motivation and drive,” which connects to the car accident that caused the coma. “Mercury is the planet of communication and memory,” which connects to the short-term memory loss. “And Uranus is the planet of surprising events,” says Wolter.

Now it all made sense. For years, people would tell Wolter how much of a tragedy it was that he went through such a severe accident. “It wasn’t an accident,” said Wolter. “It was a gift.”

Now, nearly 15 years into his studies, Wolter is a well-accomplished astrologer, teacher and believer. “I help people with a deeper look at who they came here to be,” says Wolter. “People come in when there’s a tough question or some big change is happening.”

He considers astrology a meaningful reflection and says that he thinks it’s inspiring to have one’s life lessons be things that were kind of planned for you. “The teachers are the events of your life, the events of the lives around you and the events of the world,” says Wolter.

With that said, Wolter isn’t a supporter of what most think astrology consists of: horoscopes. “They shooting us all in the foot,” says Wolter. He feels that they aren’t very beneficial because they stereotype and generalize the world into 12 categories. “Applying something to 1/12 of the world’s population…is insulting,” admits Wolter.

One of the reasons that it’s so popular is because of how intriguing it is, but Wolter admits that many Astrologers use that as bait to bring in clients. “They put out horoscopes and people call and say, I wanna learn more,” states Wolter.

Wolter also believes that astrology is about the planets, not the signs. He considers sun signs a misconception about astrology. Using what would by my sun sign, Wolter says: “Laura is a Taurus…I think that’s really inappropriate to say. Laura is a Laura.”

Other widely talked about, yet puzzling topics are natal or birth charts. These charts can be confusing, but a very helpful and useful tool in the world of astrology. “[It’s] a snapshot of the planets from the second you were born and a mandala of who we’re becoming” explains Wolter.

What are very easy to decipher, though, are transits. Looking at transits consists of reading where the planets are currently, and how to apply it to your life. “[They can] see when Mars opposes their Saturn, some stuff goes down,” explains Wolter.

Now what to do with all this information? Leave it up to a professional. “An astrologer has built a relationship with the living sky,” says Wolter. Wolter says since there are so many ways to use the natal chart, he thinks it’s really important for clients to be clear about what they want.

“It’s a holistic understanding about how our life stories are working as a whole,” says Wolter. “A reading with me is stepping back from life and looking down at you on the stage of the world and going, ‘Wow, I see it, I really am on an important mission, I really am here for a good reason.’”

That’s what I think the main gift of astrology is, is empowering people where their at and understanding that you are who you’re supposed to be, you are where you’re supposed to be; stop giving your power away to people’s ideas of who you’re supposed to be. Claim power…you’re here on a mission, you’re not here as a consumer. That’s not what life is.”
