6 Ways to Get into a Warm Weather Mindset

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Skidmore chapter.

Spring is here and we are loving the warm weather! Sometimes it feels like a fluke when we have days with cold winds and rain, but you have to fake it until you make it. If you’re not quite convinced, here’s how to get into a warm weather mindset.

1. Watch a tropical movie

Let’s be honest, we can never get enough of those cheesy tropical movies, and they’re perfect to get us in a sunny mood. Some movies we recommend: Spring Breakers, She’s all that, and From Justin to Kelly. If you prefer TV shows, try: the OC, 90210, and Survivor.

2. Go outside!

Now that this winter has finally come to an end, we can stop hibernating in our rooms. A great way to get in the warm weather mindset is to go outside and explore beautiful Saratoga Springs! Instead of taking the bus or driving into town, why not go for the 20-minute walk down the scenic Broadway? For something closer, join the Skidmore community on the green to tan, throw a frisbee, and meet new people.

3. Rock those flip-flops, sunglasses, and dresses!

Nothing is better than putting away your North Face (or Salvatian Army) jacket and ditching the snowboots. We finally get to pull out those cute crop tops, spring dresses, and fedora hats we’ve been dreaming about, and maybe even have a little shopping spree.

4. Make smoothies/frozen drinks

There’s nothing better than an icy smoothie to get you in the mood. Check out one of our favorite five-minute recipes below to feel like you’re on the beach in no time!

Directions:

  1. In one blender, mix: 1 frozen banana, peeled and sliced; 2 cups frozen strawberries, raspberries, or cherries; 1 cup milk; ½ cup plain or vanilla yogurt; ½ cup freshly squeezed orange juice; and 2 to 3 tablespoons honey or to taste.
  2. Blend all of the ingredients until the mixture becomes smooth.
  3. Pour into glasses and serve.
  4. ENJOY!

     * For a non-dairy alternative: you can substitute the milk and yogurt with: apple juice, rice milk, coconut milk, soy yogurt, or soy milk *

Also, you can make some fruit ice cubes too! Check out some more flavorful recipes to make ice cubes here: http://www.buzzfeed.com/peggy/19-simple-ways-to-liven-up-your-summer-ice-cubes

5. Make a Bob Marley playlist on your iPod

Music that just makes you want to chill is always the best! To get into the mindset, put together a Bob Marley playlist on your iPod. If you need a little help or don’t know where to start, check out this 8tracks playlist and go for Summer Days & Sun Rays (Bob Marley) to get in the “don’t worry, be happy” mood.

6. Indulge in a trashy beach read

Even if you don’t have much free time on your hands, we recommend picking up an easy book to relax. Surprisingly, the best beach reads are page-turners that we can’t help but love. These trashy beach reads are addictive and have plenty of drama and intrigue to keep us interested. Some of our favorites are:

·      The Last Song by Nicholas Sparks

·      Chocolates for Breakfast by Pamela Moore

·      Valley of the Dolls by Jacqueline Susann

·      Beautiful Ruins by Jess Walter

·      Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kawn
