It’s that time of year again!  The crunching of Cracker Jacks, the iconic Pru sticking out over Right Field, the man in the yellow screaming “get yah hot dawgs heyah!” and the cheering of 37,000 fans with the spirit of the Red Sox running through their blood: this is baseball season.

One of the best parts about going to Boston College is having the city right at our fingertips.  With its endless possibilities of entertainment, many BC students neglect to actually get in for a Red Sox game either in the spring or even in the fall.  The success of Boston sports teams over the past decade has made the act of buying tickets nearly impossible, or at least that’s what we broke college kids think.  However, what many BC students don’t realize is that purchasing tickets for a game at Fenway Park isn’t that unthinkable!  In fact, the cheapest tickets are only $25!  But, the tradeoff is standing for the majority of the game.

There’s something about Fenway Park that should be experienced by everyone living in the Boston area.  The one hundred year-old baseball field is as historic as it is original.  It’s also somewhat modern, with new amenities such as the electronic menus at the snack stands.  But that’s just about as modern as Fenway gets.  What people truly go to Fenway to experience is the history encapsulated in over a century’s worth of wear and tear on the stands of the park.  They go to be a part of the tradition of Red Sox Nation and experience the Boston culture that is truly unique to this city.

I recently went to Fenway with a bunch of my BC friends and had a night to remember.  We were lucky enough to score tickets to the Red Sox vs. Yankees game and made the short trip down the Green Line to watch one of the greatest rivalries in sports.  Being from the Boston area, I naturally expected all my friends to be dressed head to toe in Sox gear.  However, when I met up with everyone it was pretty much a 50/50 split of Red Sox and Yankees apparel.  Even my best friend was wearing a Yankees hat!  At first I was nervous about rolling up to Fenway with such a big group of Yankees fans, but then I realized that it’s all just a part of the experience.  A lot of people at BC are from the New York area, so of course there will always be some Yankees fans around.  Taking on Fenway with such a big group of them was never something I thought I would do, but the rivalry just made the night that much better!

So remember BC gals, make an effort to get into the city and explore! Going to Fenway should be on every BC student’s bucket list and is something that can be easily crossed off.  Even if you’re not a Red Sox fan, experiencing America’s favorite ballpark is well-worth spending the little cash we have left.
