Quick Tips For Working Out At The Rec

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Mizzou chapter.

Getting in shape can feel like such a drag. Running on the treadmill or using an elliptical machine can to be the most redundant activity in the universe. But Mizzou students have the privilege of having a recreation center that includes a diverse range of ways to keep in shape. Things can get difficult when you want to get in shape but don’t know where to start. Without a specific plan, going to the rec will most likely result in running .3 miles on the treadmill and staring at the boys in the weight room. That is why having a workout plan is always a good idea.

1. Start with some weight lifting. Lifting weights will help you lose weight fast and look toned. You do not have to make it your goal to get super muscular, lifting weights will just help your metabolism speed up and help you lose weight.

2. Running on the dreaded treadmill will not be that bad if you have some great new music on your iPod to listen to while you run. Always make sure you have some good tunes to keep your mind off of the redundancy of running in place. Doing a good warm-up on the treadmill is usually the best idea so it doesn’t get too boring.

3. Then finishing the run on the indoor track is a good idea because it tends to feel more productive when you are actually moving rather than running in place. Six laps on the indoor track is one mile so counting your laps as you run will keep your mind occupied.

4. If you aren’t someone who likes to run with music, invite a friend to workout with you! Then you can feel accountable for your exercise and have someone to keep you company.

5. The rec also offers a wide variety of classes that can be a great alternate to your usual workout routine. The rec offers various yoga classes, dance classes, pilates classes and cycling classes. There are classes for all levels of athletic ability and so many to choose from.

6. Swimming is excellent cardio and often over-looked. Swimming is a great alternative to running everyday. It will give your knees a break from the pressure that is created when running. Alternating swimming days and running days will keep things from becoming redundant.

7. Rewarding yourself for your workout is a good idea to keep motivated in your exercise routine. You can buy yourself a cute new dress and only allow yourself to wear it after a month of working out to some extent everyday. This will give you motivation to even go to the rec and put your exercise plan into action.

8. The technology of all of the exercise equipment really helps to keep your brain preoccupied. You can track your workout and calories burned on the elliptical or treadmill. You can also watch TV while running to pass time and keep focus off of the intensity of your workout.
