1. Wear your classiest, most expensive clothing
While it’s good to look nice, don’t believe a sorority is going to mind where you got your dress or your shoes. Dress in what you feel comfortable in, and you’ll stand out a hundred times more than you would in the same old designer clothing.
2. There’s someone for everyone
Many girls are led to believe that you’ll fit in with at least one sorority during recruitment, but that’s not necessarily true. It’s possible not to feel at home in any of the sororities on campus and that’s completely okay! Don’t force yourself into something that you’re not 100% sure of.
3. Joining a sorority is paying for friends
Sorority dues are in place to cover events, maintenance of the sorority house, and support the national chapter. There is no amount of money that could buy you the support, memories, or relationships that a sorority will bring you. Ignore the outsiders who insist you’re just paying for friends. They clearly don’t know what they’re talking about!
4. I won’t have friends outside of my sorority
Joining a sorority certainly means instant new friends that you wouldn’t have met otherwise, but it’s definitely not a restriction on making friends. Not all of your friends have to be a part of your sorority or even Greek life in general. Naturally, you’re going to make friends from your classes, your dorm, clubs, and even walking around campus, so don’t fret!
5. Sorority girls are stuck up and superficial
Many people tend to believe that sorority girls are stuck up and undeniably rude, but that certainly is not the case. Sorority girls are just as diverse in attitudes as non-Greek girls. Also, they’re a lot more down-to-earth than people expect. Not everything’s Lilly Pulitzer and Cosmopolitan. If you’re really laid back there’s nothing to worry about when it comes to getting along with these girls.
6. You need to be a freshman to participate in recruitment
While most girls who rush tend to be freshman, it shouldn’t deter upperclassmen from rushing as well. Greek life is something to become a part of at any age. Even one year of commitment can change your life forever!
7. Sorority girls don’t care about grades
All sororities have a certain (high) GPA that they expect their sisters to uphold, and the sisters usually see their grades as one of the most important things to focus on. If high grades aren’t met, you’ll usually be asked to leave. Sororities are also a great way to seek internships and job opportunities. Without the good grades, you actually may not be able to keep up with a sorority, as many people don’t suspect.
8. If you pledge a sorority, you better like to party
While I can’t guarantee that sorority girls don’t party, I know that it’s not as common as you think it would be based off of movies and television shows. Girls in sororities have a reputation to uphold both with perspective members and the university itself. Most colleges have a no-tolerance policy for partying, so why would a sorority take a chance of getting caught?
9. Joining a sorority would be too much of a time commitment
Yes, being in a sorority is a time commitment, but what organization isn’t? If you want to be involved, you will find a way to do it. Being in a sorority, or really part of any club or group helps you prioritize your time and therefore keeps you from being over-booked and over-stressed.
