Eckerd College’s Very Own Volleyball Star: Ali McAlvany

Year: Senior

Age: 21

Hometown: Roswell, Georgia

Major(s): Biology and Anthropology

Position: Outside Hitter

Two weekends ago at the Palm Beach Atlantic Hyatt Sunshine Classic, senior Ali McAlvany became one of only nine Eckerd College Volleyball Players to reach 1,000 kills during her college career. Ali reached 1,000 kills by racking in 44 kills in only 4 matches! Ali currently ranks 7th all-time in the history of Eckerd’s volleyball program. This is an amazing accomplishment for Ali, possibly the biggest in her 12-year career. 12 years ago Ali began playing volleyball because her two older sisters played. Both of Ali’s older sisters played volleyball in college and Ali says that her “oldest sister is [her] role model when it comes to volleyball.”

Ali has been an asset to the volleyball team since her freshman year; she has started in almost every game and not only leads the team in kills but has also contributed greatly defensively. Ali’s favorite Eckerd College volleyball memory occurred her freshman year when the team upset the team ranked number 1 in the nation, University of Tampa. This season Ali hopes that the team will make the “elite eight” which the Tritons have never done before. The legacy Ali hopes to leave the volleyball program at Eckerd with id one of trust and a strong work ethic; she hopes to leave the team better than it was when she arrived freshman year. As a senior, she will be missed by the volleyball program next year. After graduation Ali hopes to possibly spend a year playing volleyball overseas and then pursuing a career in medicine.

Be sure to come out and support Ali and the rest of the volleyball team as they are currently 7-1! The next home games are September 24th at 7 pm versus Rollins College, September 26th versus Florida Southern College, September 27th versus Saint Leo University, and October 1st versus University of Tampa.
