Hottest Trends for Fall 2014

Did someone just say “pumpkin spice latte”? Yep, fall is pretty much here, folks. The days are getting shorter while everyone’s to-do list is getting regrettably longer. The semester is in full-swing, which means research papers, exams, and lengthy reading assignments. Yikes!

Naturally, every sane person’s reaction is to wish that life would just slow down, even if it’s only for a minute. We pine for the long, lazy days of summer when we could stay in bed and binge on Netflix until noon and stay out with friends until midnight. Ah, those were the days….

So, how do you fight away the “Summertime Sadness”? It’s simple: embrace the change in the weather through your wardrobe. Trust me, these fun new trends will take your mood—and your closet—from drab to fab!

“Welcome to the 60s!”

It’s time to get your Austin Powers on, baby! Because the Swingin’ Sixties are back and better than ever! How can you possibly feel down in the dumps when you’re wearing clothing from one of fashion’s most pivotal decades? You can’t!

The next time you venture to an area with a decent selection of shopping venues, be sure to look for the bright, mod staples that were classic to the 60s. Knee-high boots, mini-skirts, and felt jackets are all fair game. Fit-and-flare dresses in fluorescent colors or bold prints are also fun features of this whimsical wardrobe.

So, pouf up your hair, perfect your cat-eye eyeliner, and embrace your inner Twiggy!

Tight-knit

Sweater weather is most definitely in the forecast for this fall. So, rejoice! Nothing is better than curling up in an oversized sweater with a cup of tea and a good book after a grueling day of classes. And the best part? The bigger, the better! No sweater is too bulky or too slouchy.

But the knitted look doesn’t just apply to sweaters; it extends to virtually all parts of your wardrobe! Thick, cable-knit leggings, tights, and knee socks are a must this season. Large, knitted scarves and fingerless gloves are also hot items this fall.

My advice to you is either grab these items before they’re gone, or pick up your knitting needles and get to work, ladies!

Furreal Forreal.

They’re baaacckkk. Yes, my fellow collegiates! Fur is back, and in a big way, so retrieve your fuzzy vests and coats from last year from the deepest, darkest depths of your closet.

All joking aside, while fur makes a great statement piece, it can also make another less-than-favorable statement. I encourage anyone reading this to opt for faux fur pieces as opposed to the alternative. Choosing faux fur will save the lives of innocent animals (not to mention your bank account).

One is NOT the Loneliest Number!

Two earrings are overrated, am I right? According to the UK newspaper, “The Telegraph,” wearing a single earring as a statement piece is becoming quite stylish. Now you can finally buy those big, chunky earrings without feeling ridiculous—because you only have to wear one of them!

Belt it Out.

Looking for a fall coat? Best make sure that it has a belt first! Coats with a belted waist are all the rage this season. Look for knee-length peacoats and trenches that cinch at the waist. If you’re super thrifty, you can even buy a funky belt to accentuate a coat that you already have! Not to mention that this is the perfect opportunity to show off your fabulous figure!

Lace it Up.

Now for everyone’s favorite part: the shoes. As I mentioned earlier, knee-high mod boots are great for dressing up an outfit. But what if you’re more of a casual gal? Well, look no further than your old, faithful pair of combat boots. If you’re looking for something new, try a pair of floral Doc Martens to spice up your look!
