Puces POP: Montreal’s creative and artistic extravaganza

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at McGill chapter.

This past Saturday, September 20, I spent the afternoon at one of Montreal’s most unique events: POP Montreal. The five-day festival aims to showcase new and fresh musical talent and independent artists from around the city. Attending Puce POP, the trade show, was one of the coolest experiences I have had in Montreal thus far. Upon entering the basement of this church I was literally surrounded by an artistic aura; everything from the music to the lighting created a spectacular ambiance. Tables were arranged around the room featuring different products and unique art forms. With delicious foods and even stunning accessories, Puce POP really featured it all.

There were a few tables that caught my eye and had me standing speaking to the owners for quite some time, trying to truly grasp how much effort and skill has been put into the creation of many of the beautiful art forms. A table of hand crafted soaps and beauty products made from all natural and soy products had me rethink what products I slather on my face daily. The beautiful jewelry, so delicately crafted, and the knit headbands and scarves made me wonder what I do with all my free time and why I haven’t taken up a cool hobby.

Food and drink was needed after a trip around to each table, so I got to sample a whole variety of delicious things, including spicy guacamole, organic mulled lemonade, homemade jams, and organic popsicles

Needless to say, the metro ride down to Puce POP was no hassle at all when you realize how rare of an occasion it is, when you can attend an event that puts DIYs in the spotlight and recognizes lesser-known artistic forms for their true beauty. If you weren’t able to come down to POP Montreal’s event and celebrate a decade of the city’s design community, I highly suggest you keep your ears and eyes open for next year’s event. Be sure to check out the list of my favorite vendors that we had a great time seeing, and dip into the artistic pool of Montreal – there surely isn’t a lack of it in this great city

Crown Flora

This Toronto-based company is a retail store and studio. They specialize in gorgeous waxed handbags and the coolest botanical creations I have ever seen. They even use fluorescent coloured plastic dinosaurs to house the gorgeous plants.

Montreal Machin

Birch has always been my favorite tree and so once I saw this table I immediately gravitated towards it. Their use of birch bark as lamps of all sorts is extremely unique and such a quirky way to upgrade a space. Any one of them would definitely look cool in a student apartment.

POPS Art

For those worried about the freshman fifteen, have no fear! These delicious treats are guilt free AND healthy… no joke. They are made form 100% all natural fruits and vegetables and the flavors are unique and quite delicious. The next time you’re craving a frozen dessert, try the lemon cucumber one (you can thank me later).

So next year, expand your circles and get out of the McGill bubble. There is so much beauty and talent to discover in Montreal, and the inspiration is right at our fingertips.
