Ever looked at stars like Lindsay Lohan or Gisele Bündchen and envied their multitude of freckles? You’re not alone! Freckles have long been an indicator of youthfulness and health, especially since freckles tend to be brought out by the sun. While some girls are blessed with a sprinkling of freckles across their nose and cheeks, others may only have a few freckles here and there. That’s why Topshop created their brand new Freckle Pencil in Forever Young ($7 at Topshop) as a way for girls to fake their way to a freckled face. This technique has been seen everywhere, from Olivia Wilde to the NYFW runway, and as a dutiful Beauty School blogger, I had to put this new pencil to the test!
As I mentioned in the video, before adding my freckles I prepped my face and filled in my eyebrows as usual. I then added the peachy-pink Topshop Powder Blush in Do It Again ($12 at Topshop) to the apples of my cheeks and the Topshop Glow Stick in Play Up ($16 at Topshop) to highlight the tops of my cheekbones. I created a slight cat eye with the Topshop Magic Liner in Scorch ($12 at Topshop) and then brightened up my undereye area with Topshop Brighten in Moonlight ($14 at Topshop). I finished off the look with the Topshop Sheer Lips in Alibi ($12 at Topshop) for a peachy-nude lip.
The freckle pencil itself was surprisingly easy to use, and I only needed to use a small amount of pressure to make delicate marks on my face. I found that the color of the pencil worked well with my complexion and hair color, but someone with a fairer complexion would need to really make sure to blend out the marks well. Once I tapped the product over my face, I used my ring finger to blend the “freckles” in. This did not take very long, and the marks softened easily. I did find that this also meant that the freckles smudged rather easily, so I would recommend using a makeup setting spray, like the Make Up For Ever Mist & Fix setting spray ($12 at Sephora) to set all your work in place.
Once I finished creating haphazard freckles on my nose, across my cheeks and on my forehead, I stepped outside to get a look at my skin in natural light. I fell in love with the result and could hardly tell that the freckles weren’t real. To the casual observer, the freckles themselves probably wouldn’t register nearly as much as a generally youthful appearance would.
Overall, I was really impressed with this freckle pencil. Now is the perfect time for Topshop to release this product, as most of our summer tans and freckles will start to fade as the colder weather moves in. This pencil is the perfect way to preserve a little piece of summer and to add a little something extra to your everyday look.
The verdict: I’m a big fan and I expect to get a ton of use out of this pencil!
