As students at McGill, we are among the most privileged. Not only do we attend one of the top 25 schools in the world, but we are also situated in one of the most desired and cultural areas in Canada. You know what this means…you have a world of involvement and exploration at your fingertips.

Lets first take a look at McGill life:

Here are four simple ways to get involved and create a diverse life at McGill:

1. Join a club: As simple as it sounds, McGill has roughly 300 clubs that you can choose from. If you are unable to find one that speaks to you, worry not, for you can even create a club of your own (with the right steps taken of course). Clubs are a phenomenal way to meet people, express yourselves, discover a new talent or love for something, and to put stress or energy into something other than school work.

2. Join an athletic class or a team: Although school is important, your health is also what will enable you to maintain good grades. What better way is there to stay in shape, while getting involved. There are intramural teams for every kind of sport you can think of. By joining a team of some sort you allow yourself to meet more people and actively become involved in McGill’s athletic life.

3. Take part in a McGill program: McGill has all kinds of committees that range from student councils and associations, to activist/sustainability projects, to safety projects. You name it, there’s a committee for it.

4. Volunteer: This option gives you a firm tie to the Montreal community, as well as the McGill. There are tons of opportunities for volunteer work. Volunteer work is more hands-on and allows you to have direct involvement in a group or charity. Click here to check out the list of volunteer opportunities. Also be sure to check out the Volunteer Fair on Wednesday, September 24 at the SSMU Ballroom.

Now moving on to exploring and living in Montreal:

It is important to immerse yourself in school life as well as Montreal life. We live in such a diverse and cultural city, why not take advantage of it?

1. Explore Different Areas: You will hear the talk of the “McGill Bubble” time and time again during your life at McGill. It is easy and comforting to stay in this so called “bubble” that limits you to a two kilometer radius circulating around McGill. You’ve got all the essentials close by and the “McGill Ghetto” is great. It is important, however, to be proactive and take the time to explore this phenomenal city. Whether you go to a restaurant in the Mile End, a walk up Mount Royal, get a crepe in Old Montreal, or hit a trendy bar in the Plateau, it is so crucial to your overall experience at McGill to explore the city outside of the Ghetto.

2. Cafes and Restaurants: Although we’re all on a budget, it’s fun from time to time to try out a new cafe or restaurant. On Sunday when you want to study, try visiting a new cafe. There are so many gorgeous cafes in Montreal, many of which are budget friendly. You may discover a new favourite study spot! Also, take advantage of the amazing range of cuisine in Montreal. On the occasion you treat yourself to a meal out, try a new place every time. It will expand your experience and taste of Montreal. A few personal favourites include Suwu on Saint Lawrence Street and The Distillery in the Latin Quarter.

3. Be sure to visit markets and check out community events: As mentioned in previous HerCampus articles, Atwater and Jean Talon are perfect markets to find fresh produce and have a fun exploration day. Also, Montreal is always hosting concerts (showcasing both local and well known artists), as well as pop-up exhibitions, film festivals, music festivals, and all-inclusive festivals such as the annual Pop Montreal event.

4. Visit Cultural Spots: Spend a few hours to check out a museum or exhibition. We’re in downtown Montreal so everything is close by. Some examples would be the Botanical Gardens, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, or the Just For Laughs Museum. Not only is it important stay cultured but it’s also fun and serves as an excellent study break.
