Tell me a little about Smart Girl’s Group: An online community, magazine, daily blog, campus chapters, and a network that started in January 2012 by Emily Raleigh who at the time was a senior in high school but currently attends Fordham University. She was making a field guide to high school for her sister Sophie and was sad when she finished and thought about what else she could do with it. The way I like to describe Smart Girls Group to those who aren’t familiar with it is the American Girl magazine from when we were little to the next level. We cover all topics, everything from current events, to health and recipes, to how to write a thank you note- all coming from our mission of “Be smart, share smarts.”
How long have you been involved in SGG and what’s your position? My best friend Tori told me about a project that her best friend, founder Emily Raleigh was starting and that I should get involved. I applied in July 2012 to be director of The Loop, their daily blog. Emily took me on and from then until August 2013 I had that position and did everything from approving articles, to coordinating posting schedules. It got a little crazy so Emily and I came up with a position that’s more up my alley, which is Director of Operations, which I took on in September 2013. I answer all emails that come to us, place those who apply to be a part of SGG, write the weekly newsletter “Sister Mail,” and am the head of the Regional Program which is in it’s early stages!
How can girls on campus get involved with SGG? I definitely want to start an SGG Chapter at Emerson next semester and also create a Boston community for Smart Girls! They can also read our blog and magazine or join their campus chapters!
What can we expect from SGG in the future? We had our first very successful conference this summer at Lincoln Center in NYC, so definitely multiple professional conferences in 2015. Also, the new Regional Program, a website re-design, and we’re featured in November’s Marie Claire which is very exciting!
What’s your ideal job? My end goal is to have a theater company and hopefully be a producer on Broadway. I think SGG is helping me along the way by teaching my administrative and management skills, and it’s definitely what’s driven my major in college. And just to make sure that women are always being empowered.
Who’s your role model? I don’t think I have a specific role model, but I look up to anybody that’s completely doing what they love. It’s people who are waking up every morning to do what they love, and I’m a huge advocate for doing what you love, because if you’re not it’s missed opportunities for things you could be passionate about. I see that in SGG and Emerson everyday and that’s what I love about being here, so anyone like that- go them!
What are you involved in on campus? I am the Assistant Production Coordinator on the Kidding Around E-Board, a member of Emerson Republicans, and I’m a new member of AEPhi.
How do manage everything you’re involved in? Prioritizing! I’ve learned over the years that if it doesn’t get done right away it’s not a big deal, so each day I make a list of the top 3 things that have to get done- whether it be pick up Georgetown Cupcakes or have a conference call with the Smart Girls staff, prioritizing is really important. Definitely lots of post-it notes.
