Asia is a woman of many talents! Whether she’s working hard in the classroom or on Capitol Hill, Asia is for sure a campus celebrity to admire. Currently working on Capitol Hill, HC FAMU got to talk to Asia about her internship and more!

HC FAMU: Please describe your current internship in DC.
AC: Currently I am a Communications Intern in the office of Congresswoman Corrine Brown 5th District of Florida. I assist with a wide variety of administrative tasks, write correspondence, handle mail and manage phone calls. I work on special projects, assist in planning events and attend meetings, hearings and briefings to remain informed about current legislative issues. I also complete research as needed and write responses on my findings.
HC FAMU: What is one important lesson you’ve learned since working with the CBCF?
AC: That it is important to have fun, your life should not always be work. A lot of things in life aren’t really that stressful or serious, we just make them out to be.
HC FAMU: Can you see yourself working on the Hill after graduation?
AC: I can actually. I feel like with the relationships I have built it is definitely possible. I enjoy the work that I do here and it is nice to feel like I am making a difference, especially in my community.
HC FAMU: How is the DC social life?
AC: Everything and more. It’s super nice because everywhere you go, you’re surrounded around successful young people.
HC FAMU: When you aren’t interning, what do you like to do?
AC: I like to explore the city there is never a dull moment in DC. Visiting the monuments, going to the Smithsonians and even just free events in and outside the city.
HC FAMU: Do you have any advice to students looking to apply to CBCF?
AC: May the odds forever be in your favor. [laughs] No, I’m kidding. Apply if you’re looking for a firsthand experience and more understanding on what Congress does.
HC FAMU: Do you plan on sharing your intern experience with students once you return to the Hill?
AC: Absolutely. I encourage any and every one to look into the opportunities CBCF has to offer, especially FAMU students and recent graduates because the network is so large up here. The program is not limited to current students.
HC FAMU: How did FAMU prepare you for succeeding at your current position?
AC: Because I was so involved in school I had to learn time management and how to prioritize. Without those skills I would have been in a world of trouble while up here.
HC FAMU: In five years, I’d like to be _____.
AC: Working in public service. I haven’t really narrowed which area of focus because I still dibbling and dabbling into different issues.
HC FAMU: You’d be surprise to know that the Hill isn’t ______.
AC: As old-fashioned and traditional as one would think. On out of session days, it is acceptable and actually expected for jeans to be worn in certain offices. Everyone isn’t in suits every single day.
