14 Times Emma Watson Understood Us

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Fairfield chapter.

Emma Watson is an icon. At the age of 24, she has made a name for herself with her talent, her intelligence, her looks, and her charm. Yet, despite her incredible fame and wealth, Emma is undeniably one of the most relatable celebrities. She is poised and inspirational but she is a true goofball with a winning sense of humor and an amusing twitter. Here are 14 times that Emma Watson just got us:

1. When she understood our disgust with the tabloids. Emma has been prominent in the news recently for her persistent defense of women’s rights, including her fellow stars whose privacy has been robbed. “Even worse than seeing women’s privacy violated on social media is reading the accompanying comments that show such a lack of empathy.”

2. When she understood that fun trumps function. She took a page out of Rupert Grint’s book after he bought himself an ice cream truck and learned how to have a little fun. “I just got rid of my sofa and replaced it with a ping pong table. I think this is the best decision I have made in months.”

3. When she understood our frustration with the damsel in distress stereotype. Be careful jerks, I highly doubt Emma would appreciate your “MRS degree” joke and, from what I’ve seen in The Prisoner of Azkaban, she has a pretty good right hook. “I feel like young girls are told this whole idea that they have to be this kind of princess and be all delicate and fragile and that’s bullshit.”

4. When she understood the difficulty of picking a major. Emma is so talented that she could do just about anything with her life and be successful. She can relate to that registration struggle. “The difficulty for me is that I’m interested in so many different things. I could never really imagine myself doing one thing and I’m pretty sure that I’ll end up doing four or five different things.”

5. When she understood how hard it is to look good for an 8 A.M class. Emma is all about inner beauty and her words of encouragement can definitely help when you have five minutes to get to class. “Feeling beautiful has nothing to do with what you look like, I promise.”

6. When she understood the everyday struggle of opening Nutella. “I never feel so accomplished as when I open a tough jar.”

7. When she understood our dedication to Harry Potter. Emma grew up with Hermione and the books the same way that we did and no one understands the impact that they have had better than she does. “It’s been my childhood, it’s been my life for the past ten years.”

8. When she understood that you need to laugh at yourself sometimes. Emma’s tweets prove that she is only human and it makes us feel slightly better about that time we ripped our pants in front of everyone in fifth grade. “Just did four interviews in Cannes without realizing the nerds I had eaten had made my tongue green. #oops #nerds”

9. When she understood that labels are hurtful. “We should stop defining each other by what we are not, and start defining ourselves by who we are.”

10. When she understood the true classics of the late 90s. Emma’s twitter is full of song and artist suggestions ranging from Sinatra to alternative rock, but she didn’t forget to give a shout out to my girl Christina. “Genie in a Bottle – Christina Aguilera. What a tune.”

11. When she understood the feeling of not fitting in. Emma, while beautiful and seemingly perfect, has often said that she doesn’t meet the young actress stereotype of a wild child. Instead of trying to be how everyone else was, she learned to accept who she was and what she loved. “Don’t feel stupid if you don’t like what everyone else pretends to love.”

12. When she understood our panic about joining the real world. Our worlds are vastly different but they’re both chaotic messes and Emma can feel our pain. “Look, I just want to know exactly what the next ten years of my life is going to look like, ok? And to have it organized on a colour coordinated calendar. Is that really too much to ask.”

13. When she understood our bad boy phase. Go ahead and judge me for loving Draco Malfoy when I was 13, at least I know that Emma felt the same way. “Yes, between the ages of 10 and 12, I had a really terrible crush on Tom Felton. We love a bad guy and he was a few years older and he had a skateboard, and that just did it.”

14. When she understood that you just have to be you. “Beauty is letting yourself live.”
