What to Wear to an Interview

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Bryant chapter.

What you wear and how you look is extremely important when making a first impression on an interviewer – you need to look put together and professional. Her Campus has put together this guide in order to make sure that you are business ready on interview day!

Besides the basic routine to freshen up, make sure your hair is neat, nails are clean, breath is fresh (no coffee breath!), and your make up is light and natural. If you have piercings other than the ear lobes take them out before the interview. When it comes to outfits, it’s always safe to wear a matching business suit, with a button down shirt and closed toe shoes. Take time before the day of to get your outfit dry cleaned or iron by hand. Even right before going into the interview, check your outfit and appearance for last minute touch ups!

Here’s the breakdown:

·         The Suit: wear a pant suit, skirt and blazer, or a conservative business dress and blazer. The suit should be matching colors. Skirt and dress should be about knee length and be sure to wear nude nylons.

·         The Button Down: can be any reasonable color, but white is always classic.

·         Shoes: should be on the conservative side, meaning no pumps, stilettoes, flashy colors, and no toes showing.

·         Jewelry: is alright to wear, but be smart about how much jewelry and what pieces you wear. Keep it professional and do not wear anything that looks cheap.

This outfit shows a good example of a skirt suit and appropriate interview jewelry. However, the shoes should be closed toe.

Here is a perfect example of a business dress! But replace the purse with your Bryant portfolio holding a few copies of your resume.

This is a very nice pant suit, and matched well with the button down. The shirt pattern may be a little much for an interview, so if your company is very business formal opt for a white button down. Also, the open toed shoes are a definite no!
