In my ventures as a nail polish lover, I have uncovered a few tips and tricks from experience and from experts. Whether or not these tips seem a little unorthodox or strange, I can guarantee you this-they really do work!

Glittery Nail Polish

Glitter nail polish can be a great look, but a huge pain to remove. For this tip (discovered by celebrity manicurist Deborah Lippmann), all you need is nail polish remover with acetone, cotton balls, and aluminum foil. First, dip a cotton ball in your nail polish remover, and make sure the cotton is completely saturated. Place the cotton ball on your nail, and wrap it in aluminum foil. Complete these steps for each glitter nail and hold for about seven minutes. Unwrap the foil and cotton, and the glitter should come off with ease.

Matte Nails

University students are always on a strict budget and are constantly looking for ways to cut back on spending. This neat trick to getting matte nails can save you from wasting $10.00 on a matte topcoat. All you need is a pot, a stove and some water (you may attempt this with a kettle if you do not have access to a stove). To begin, put water into your pot and wait for it to boil. Next, paint your nails whichever colour you desire. Do not wait for the nails to dry, instead place them over the pot and let the steam from the boiled water touch your nails (but do not leave your hands too close, you do not want to burn them!). Let your hands rest above the pot for ten seconds each. Once you pull them away, voila, you have matte nails!

Nail Bubbles

After spending time on an “at home manicure”, we sometimes find little bubbles in our nails after they have dried. This is often a result of your polish being stored at too hot of a room temperature. If you want to assure that your effort is not wasted and your nails dry smoothly, place your nail polish in the fridge for approximately one hour before you paint your nails.

Clumpy Nail Polish

Nothing is more frustrating than sitting down, getting ready to do your nails, and finding that the polish you wanted to use is clumpy and thick (whether this be from poor quality, age, or leaving the lid slightly off). Although it may seem strange, an easy way to fix this is by adding nail polish remover to your nail polish. Filling up the lid of your bottle of remover with the acetone liquid, pouring it into your polish and shaking for about thirty seconds should be enough to create the perfect viscosity.

In a Rush?

Getting ready for a special occasion always seems to result in last minute rushing and last minute manicures. To assure that your nails stay perfect and smooth, leave them in cold water for five minutes while they are half-dry (do not put them in completely wet). Once you remove your hands from the icy water, you can rush as much as you want and be worry free.
