Future Broadway Babe: Alex Joyce ’17

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Notre Dame chapter.

Once Alex Joyce graduates, look for her on Broadway. This sophomore singing and acting enthusiast has big dreams and a bigger heart.

Name: Alex Joyce

Major: Film, Television, and Theatre, Spanish with a minor in Business Economics

Dorm: Badin Hall

Hometown: (suburbs of) Chicago, Illinois

What is your favorite and least favorite part of Notre Dame?

PEMCO (Pasquerilla East Musical Company) is definitely my favorite part. The camaraderie between everyone and how we get to work off of each other is incredible, and they’re some of my best friends. They are some of the most genuine people that I’ve ever met, and it’s so fun just to do what we love together.

It’s hard to think of something I don’t like about Notre Dame. Maybe it would be cool if we were closer to a city, but that’s really it. I love it here.

PEMCO put on a production of Into The Woods this semester. Can you talk about being a part of that?

Oh my gosh, it was amazing! It was so fun to be the evil stepsister because that is not who I am at all, and we got to wear these crazy costumes and wild hair and makeup. It felt like being a totally different person, and the acting for that role was just so over the top. Being in this kind of fantasy world was something I’ve never done before, and the musical directors and stage managers were so passionate about the process and wanted it to be a great show. Everyone in the cast is still such close friends. It was something special.

What about after graduation? Will you continue to act?

Yeah. I know it’s not super practical, but it’s what I love and since I only live once and if someone were to ask me what I wanted to do with my life my first thought would be singing and acting. If I was cast in a theater production or musical, I would love to do that. Getting cast in a TV show, though, would be so awesome because it’s new every single time. Either would be a dream for me.

What is your dream role?

This is super clichè, but I’m a huge Disney fan, so I would love to play a Disney princess. I also love roles that are completely different than who I am in real life. Playing Florinda was amazing and I’ve played Nellie in South Pacific and Chiffon from the Rockettes and I was in Little Shop of Horrors – all crazy fun roles.

Otherwise, I love roles that challenge me and my abilities as a performer. One of those roles was when I was in Cabaret as a freshman I played a burlesque dancer. I’m most confident in singing and acting, not so much dancing, and the role of Frenchie was something I’ve never done before. It made me a much better performer, and I’d love to continue doing those kinds of roles.

What music have you been into recently?

Right now it’s pretty much all Taylor Swift! But I love Carrie Underwood, Latino music- Shakira, Enrique Iglesias, so typical I know. I’m currently listening to Justin Bieber holiday radio.

Since we’re nearing the end of the year, what’s been the best part of 2014?

At Notre Dame, it was going on Appalachia. That was the best experience ever. It was so eye-opening and all the people were amazing. In general, I visited my friend in Spain and that was so cool. We were speaking Spanish and exposed to the culture, and we were hanging out with people from Italy, and Holland, and Brazil, and it was a big group of us. It was so cool learning everyone’s stories and history. Those are my two favorite experiences this year.

Do you have a favorite quote?

I don’t know who said it but its, “What would you do today if you knew you couldn’t fail? Now go out and do it.”

Emily Rodriguez is a sophomore English major and Business Economics minor at Notre Dame. She joined Her Campus during fall 2014 and loves to write about style, television, and movies. When not in class, she can be found singing with Halftime, contemplating going to the gym and ultimately not going, and thinking too much about Parks and Recreation.
