How to Beat the Winter Blues

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at TCNJ chapter.

Tis’ the season for long, cold walks to night classes, dry, pale skin and lack of motivation. During this lingering transition into the frigid winter months, even the best of us can get a little down. It can be hard to stay positive, and your mood may resemble the atmosphere around you: dark, and depressing. But don’t fret! If you’re feeling as cold as the weather, there are ways to beat this seasonal slump, and we’ve got you covered.

1. Get some sun!

With winter days shorter and darker than the other months, a lot of people don’t spend much time outside. Not only does sunlight provide us with vitamin D, it also greatly affects our moods. Try keeping your shades open in your room to let more light in, or sitting near a window in class or when you’re out to eat. Use a moisturizing self-tanner to give your skin a warm, healthy glow and prolong your summer tan.

2. Exercise

Because your serotonin levels are low during the winter, your body craves carbohydrates, especially high-sugar and junk foods. Not only will working out improve your physical body, it will also improve your mood. Can’t find the energy to go outside and workout? Make it fun! A good way to look forward to winter, rather than dreading it, is to take up a winter sport such as skiing, snowboarding or even ice-skating with your friends!

3. Dress Cute for the Cold

While you may be upset that shorts and flip-flops are no longer an option, winter clothing can be just as simple! Update your wardrobe with trendy infinity scarves, leg warmers and maybe splurge on that new winter coat. Even though you might dread walking to your night class in the freezing cold, don’t let yourself settle for yoga pants and a sweatshirt every day. Being cold doesn’t mean you can’t be cute!

4. Cozy up your space for the holidays

The atmosphere you live in can play a huge role in your mood during the winter. Warm up your space by hanging holiday decorations, listening to festive music and using candles or incents. Prepping for the holiday season may have its difficulties, but by keeping a good spirit, it can be something to look forward too in the winter!

Despite the lack of warmth and sunlight, you can embrace the winter! It can’t be your enemy if you know the tricks to beating the blues of this frigid, yet often cheerful season.
