6 Ways to Stay Fashionably Warm This Winter

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Mass Amherst chapter.

Happy (almost) winter, Colleigettes! So we all know that winter brings along a ton of exciting things, a break from school, snow, and a ton of excuses to see family and friends! Even though there are a bunch of reasons why winter is absolutely fantastic, the biggest problem that we sometimes have with it is the cold. Now, all of our favorite stores carry the cutest winter gear, like matching scarves and hats, but buying all of these things can get pretty pricey. Instead of spending a ton, here is a list of some great DIY ideas to keep you warm (and fashionable) during the winter season!

1. Arm-Knit Scarf

Scarves are a great way to accessorize an outfit and definitely a great way to keep warm (especially with all the UMass wind). Instead of buying a chunky knit scarf, why don’t you try and make one yourself? Yarn is pretty cheap, and most people have said that arm-knitting a scarf can take only a half hour (sometimes even less).

2. Earmuffs

There is a growing trend of wearing earmuffs during the cold weather. They’re cute, unique and super warm! Try making these DIY earmuffs out of a headband this winter! It’ll be super cheap and you can make them to match your style.

3. Recycled Sweater Mittens

If you’re going through your closet and find a bunch of sweaters that you don’t wear, why not recycle them into some nice winter mittens? This website gives a super easy tutorial on how to make mittens using the material from old sweaters. If you don’t have a sewing machine, check out the Craft Center on campus and they’ll be able to help you out!

4. Recycled Sweater Boot Cuffs

Since you only need a little bit of the sweater to make your mittens, try to use the rest of your sweater to make some boot cuffs/socks. You can use the arms of the sweater to make them really easily (and really quickly). They’ll look great with your winter boots!

5. Winter Drinks

When you’re walking to class, nothing can warm you up better than a nice, hot coffee. Try using this recipe to make a Peppermint Mocha Latte to bring with you during class. If you don’t have time to make something like this, just make a cup of hot chocolate and put a candy cane in with it. Bam! Perfect Peppermint Hot Cocoa.

6. Knit/Crochet Winter Attire

If you like to knit, crochet, or anything similar, there are unlimited patterns out there that you can use to make something warm and cozy. Some of them do cost money, but there are a ton that are free! Check out Pinterest or Ravelry for some patterns that appeal to you.

Keeping yourself warm over the winter months doesn’t have to be a hassle, especially when you can make everything you need super fast (and without spending too much). Not only that, it allows you to save a ton, while still being really fashionable and unique!
