8 A.M. classes are rough enough as it is, but they gain a new level of harshness during the long and seemingly unending winter. These early mornings include the cold, snow, ice, and the usual groggy sense of mind found in 8 A.Ms. However, these classes will seem far less daunting with some tips in mind.

1) Coffee, coffee, coffee

Come on, you saw this one coming! Not only is it nice to have a warm beverage in your hand for the cold walk to class, but the caffeine boost can help wake up your brain and keep you alert for class. Keurigs are great to use for coffee on the go, and if you don’t have one, you can pick up coffee at Saga. If you tell the worker at the entrance you’re only getting coffee, they will let you in without having to swipe.

2) Forsake cute and go for comfy

No one is going to notice or care about what you wear to your 8 A.M. Philosophy class. Throw on those yoga pants and sweatshirt with pride and don’t forget some fuzzy socks. Sturdy boots are best for managing icy pathways. If you want to, you can always go back to your dorm to change after class, but if it’s cold out, do you really think that’s going to happen?

3) Appreciate the view

One of the best things about walking to an 8 A.M. class alone on a snowy morning is realizing just how beautiful campus is. The quad is quiet and peaceful, and – depending on how early you leave for class – fairly empty. When there’s fresh snow on the ground, it’s a beautiful bonus. Now is the time for that Instagram picture you’ve secretly been planning for weeks – it’s okay, we’ve all done it.

4) Layer up

A lot of classrooms have unpredictable heating situations. Your 8 A.M. could be freezing cold or boiling hot. Wear things that you can easily take off if you get hot, like cardigans or scarves. And yes, there may be those days when you wear your jacket to stay warm for the entirety of class.

5) Think of potential snow days

One of the greatest feelings in the collegiate world is having a snow day on the day of your 8 A.M. You can stay in bed and sleep until noon! With this possibility in mind, it may not be easier to wake up, but anything can happen, right?
