Golden Globes Fashion Review 2015: the Good, the Bad, and the Unique

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Carleton chapter.

The glitz, the glamour, the fame, oh my! Awards season kicked off last Sunday with the 72nd Annual Golden Globes Awards. All eyes were on the talented stars and starlets as they walked the infamous red carpet. There were some gorgeous gowns that left me speechless, and then there were others that simply fell flat. From feathers and frills to ruby reds, we saw it all. These ladies of Hollywood sure know how to make a fashion statement. Grab a bag of popcorn and let us recap the fashion hits and misses of the 2015 Golden Globes!

The GOOD

1. Emma Stone in Lanvin

Who says you need to wear a dress to the Golden Globes Awards? Emma Stone was a knockout in this Lanvin jumpsuit with an embellished bodice and dramatic silk bow. She didn’t win Best Supporting Actress for her latest film Birdman but she did win major style points in my eyes. This is the reason why Emma continues to be one of the fashion icons for young women today.

2. Taylor Schilling in Ralph Lauren

Taylor Schilling looked truly ravishing in this crimson Ralph Lauren gown. This leading lady in the nominated Netflix drama, Orange is the New Black, embodies the phrase “less is more”. I am obsessed with the keyhole, crisscross neckline and her flawless coordination with the red carpet. Best dressed by far!

3. Kate Huson in Versace

Sleek, sexy and sparkly: three of the best words to describe women’s fashion and they happen to be all wrapped up in this show-stopping Versace gown. The embellished cutouts show off Kate Hudson’s fabulous curves and the plunging neckline just adds to the wow-factor. This talented actress looked absolutely radiant!

The BAD

1. Lana Del Rey in Vintage Travilla

There are only two explanations for this gown: either Lana Del Rey took a wrong turn while heading to an audition for The Little Mermaid: The Musical or all-over pleats are coming back in style. The fabric looks cheap and the bow at the waist just adds to the tackiness. On a positive note, the colour is gorgeous on her. Unfortunately, I think this vintage Travilla should really stay in the decade that it came from.

2. Melissa McCarthy in Her Own DIY Creation

There is a reason why some do-it-yourself projects should be left at home, and here is the perfect example why. Melissa McCarthy, one of the stars of the comedy St. Vincent, strutted the red carpet in her very own creation. The answer is simple: there is just too much going on. Between the sparkly, oversized bow, the tiered skirt, and the light pink blouse, the eye doesn’t know where to look. In the end, if she feels fierce, that is all that matters.

3. Lena Dunham in Zac Posen

The creative genius behind the popular HBO show Girls, wore a silk, high-low Zac Posen dress on the red carpet. I am not a fan. The hemline is a little too long (it should be to the knee), making Lena look shorter than she is. The odd seaming around the waist hides her fabulous figure as well.  On a positive note, I absolutely love her pointed toe heels and her dainty jewelry. Accessories for the win!

The UNIQUE

1. Lupita Nyong’o in Giambattista Valli Haute Couture

The talented and always graceful Lupita Nyong’o never fails when she takes fashion risks, and this floral gown by Giambattista Valli Haute Couture is no exception. The rich purple colour was made for her, and the delicate appliques on the bodice take the dress to the next level of perfection. I haven’t seen anything quite like this and I couldn’t imagine anyone else rocking it like Lupita did. This beauty is truly a floral goddess!

2. Keira Knightley in Chanel

There is no need to go to the butterfly or bird exhibit when you have it right here on Keira Knightley’s dress! This custom Chanel frilly frock looks like a mix between a doily and a display from the insectarium. I expected big things from this fashion muse, but unfortunately, the dress aged her about 30 years. I will give her this: it is a unique, one-of-a-kind gown that definitely was the talk of the Golden Globes, and it is so Keira Knightley.

3. Rosamund Pike in Vera Wang

If I looked like this after having a baby a month ago, I wouldn’t be complaining. Rosamund Pike, nominated for the film Gone Girl, looked like a goddess in this strappy, open-back Vera Wang number. She was all-smiles on the red carpet, which only added to the beauty of the dress. The gorgeous chiffon skirt lay perfectly over her body, and she almost seemed to be floating across the carpet.
