As late as it is into the first month of the new year, you may have gathered that Jan Plan has taken Mayflower Hill and the Her Campus Colby team literally by storm. Surrounded by sparkling snow, slippery sidewalks, and sudden sunsets, it can be a challenge to find ways to pass the time. Even more difficult is romance without sun or warmth.

Whenever I think of cute dates, I think of picnics, walks on the beach, and maybe even a rowboat or tandem bicycle. We only have a few months a year free of rain, snow, or ice, and who wants to go months without any romance just because it’s cold outside? So to you guys and girls in relationships, here are some ideas to have fun – while staying warm – on adorable winter dates.

  1. Ice Skating on Johnson Pond – while this is also enjoyable solo or with friends, there’s just a certain charm about ice skating with a significant other. Even if you aren’t quite at the Olympic level, or constantly on the verge of falling – like myself – ice skating is always fun, especially when you’re wearing ice skates on a pond and not shoes on the ice-covered campus. Besides, gliding along holdings hands on Colby’s frozen pond screams romance.

  2. Exploring Maine’s Charms – even if it sounds eerily like a throwback to the “Local Exploration” COOT, Maine truly provides a lot of entertainment in the way of quaint towns and local diners. Just last weekend, my boyfriend and I explored my nearby childhood home town. Lunch at a locally owned restaurant and dessert at the bakery down the street were delicious, especially because it provided a much needed escape from the monotony of dining hall food. If you have a car, or time to wait for the Jitney, a trip off campus is always worthwhile.

  3. Walking in our Winter Wonderland – maybe this sounds a little cold, but why not put all your winter gear to use? Don your Bean Boots, Patagonia, North Face, and brave the beautiful snow edition of the Arboretum. Afterwards, you have an excuse to curl up in bed and cuddle with your significant other, and even a mug of hot chocolate to complete the picture.

  4. Traditional Movie Date – even though it isn’t specific to Maine, no one ever went wrong with a good old fashioned date to the theatre. As long as you’re able to drive on the roads, a theatre is cozy, cute, and timeless. If you’re on a budget, Waterville’s own Railroad Square Cinema holds the occasional $1 Movie Night for Colby students. No matter the weather, a movie is always a good option.

  5. Staying In – when you’re with someone you care about, even an uneventful day won’t feel tiresome. If you wake up, roll over, and can see only white drifts out the window, a day in bed could be just what you need. Whether it’s spent building a pillow and blanket fort, watching Netflix or YouTube videos, or just cuddling and talking, cold weather is the perfect excuse to spend a day with someone you love.

I hope these few ideas will give all you lovebirds something romantic to do during these freezing cold times.
