What to Get Your Short-Term Significant Other for Valentine’s Day

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Emerson chapter.

You’ve only been dating a couple weeks, and bam! All of a sudden you’re surrounded by frilly pink hearts, boxes of chocolates, and adorable (yet somewhat sickening) teddy bears. It’s Valentine’s Day and you don’t know what to get for your soon-to-be but not yet serious significant other. Here are some ideas for presents that aren’t too serious, aren’t too expensive, and still show your feelings for your S.O.!

1. A pair of movie tickets

Even though 50 Shades of Grey might not be the most romantic movie, there are others that would make for a great date night. During Valentine’s Day weekend, AMC is showing all of the Oscar picks, so you can choose from those! Movie tickets are fairly inexpensive and show that you’re still putting effort into your Valentine’s Day.

2. A box of chocolates

It might seem cliché, but it still works! Who doesn’t like chocolate? Even though it might feel like you’re not giving as much thought into it as you could, a box of chocolates really is a sweet way to let someone know you care about them.

3. An ice skating date

Take your V-Day outdoors and pay for you and your S.O.’s ice skating excursion! It’s a fun way to get out during the winter and it’s something both of you can enjoy. It’s also an excuse to grip each other tightly in an attempt not to fall!

4. A walk down Commonwealth Avenue

This one may seem cheap, but it’s actually quite magical. The lights are still up on Commonwealth, so give your date the gift of some romantic alone time and walk hand-in-hand down the street.

5. A personalized present from Faneuil Hall

The Best Gift Idea Ever, a store located in Faneuil Hall, offers gifts unlike any other. This place has amazing photographs of materials that look like letters, and you can pick out your S.O.’s name and have it framed! This is a guaranteed favorite.

6. Cupcakes from Georgetown Cupcakes

Another delicious one, a couple of Valentine’s Day-themed Georgetown cupcakes make a great gift. Romantic and sweet, you can even eat them together!

7. A romantic home-cooked dinner

Whether it’s in a dorm or an apartment, a home-cooked meal is always a pleasant surprise! It doesn’t have to be all out with candles and a tablecloth; just making it yourself is enough to show someone you care!

Any of these ideas are just enough to show your special someone that they are meaningful to you, without being over the top! If you haven’t been dating long enough to call the relationship serious, then one of these gifts will definitely do the trick this Valentine’s Day!
