Galentine’s Day

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Siena chapter.

With the descent into February comes a conglomeration of red, heart shapes, roses, candies and reservations… if you’re one of those happy together people. But if you’re sick of all of the couply crap, or even if you’re just in need of a night out with your friends, February 13th is your time to shine. Why is that, you ask? Because it’s Galentine’s Day!

Galentine’s Day is our day; ladies celebrating ladies, as described by Leslie Knope. The day before Valentine’s Day is the time for you to ditch your boo-thang and go out with your girlfriends and celebrate yourselves! When Leslie Knope started this fantastic holiday, she intended for it to be celebrated with breakfast, but why not keep the party going all day long? This is our day!

Start with breakfast, then go out and do something you haven’t in a while; go bowling, visit the aquarium or the zoo, take a tour of a museum! Get lunch, then go on a shopping spree, take a hike, or visit a crafting/painting parlour! Dinner, and then hit the town!

If you aren’t feeling going out for meals, throw yourselves a little block party or potluck. Have each girl make a different dish, drink, and/or desert, and pick at it all throughout the day! Watch your favorite movies and TV episodes, or find new cheesy flicks on Netflix. Break out the old board games, revist truth or dare, or play tag/hide and seek. You can do absolutely anything you want!

In addition to endless amounts of delicious foods and adventures to celebrate your friendships, give each other gifts! Here are some ideas from Leslie herself:

  • a personalized 5,000 word essay on why your friends are so awesome
  • needlepoint pillows with their faces on them
  • a leading headline from the day they were born
  • mosaic portraits made from crushed bottles of their favorite diet sodas

Gift certificates to the spa, their favorite restaurant or store, the movies, or a personalized gift basket of stuff like lotion/snacks/wine/cookies/etc are good, too!

The options are endless, and there’s only one rule:
