Entertainment10: New York Fashion Week, Kanye West, and Drake

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UFL chapter.

Entertainment10 is back for another inside report on news from the world of entertainment. This week if you can believe it, was yet again an eventful week in Hollywood featuring a child star’s television comeback, a surprise album and one of the biggest weeks in fashion!

1. New York Fashion Week begins! After kicking off on Thursday, NYFW is fully underway with the first few days of shows having featured collections from BCBGMaxAzria, Monique Lhuillier, Nicole Miller, Rebecca Minkoff, and Kanye West’s collaboration with Adidas (we’ll get to Mr. West later). Designer collections weren’t the only stars of the runway as NYFW featured its first model with Down syndrome, actress Jamie Brewer. Brewer, best known for her roles on American Horror Story, wore clothing by designer Carrie Hammer as part of Hammer’s “Role Models Not Runway Models” show; a project that invites inspiring women to showcase Hammer’s work. Another show during NYFW had stars walk for a good cause called “Go Red for Women Red Dress Collection Show.” The show, which included celebs Ciara, Zendaya, Laverne Cox and Fifth Harmony on its runway, helps raise awareness for heart disease nationwide. NYFW will continue until February 19th.

2. The week of Kanye.  Kanye West’s week kicked off with the now infamous reenactment of his VMA T-Swift stage bombardment, during the 57th Grammys on Sunday. However, that was just the beginning to Mr. West’s action packed week as the star made headlines again when he revealed to Ryan Seacrest that “[Taylor Swift] wants to get in the studio and [they’re] definitely going to go in.” With Swift and West music on the horizon and memes galore of West’s Grammys prank, one would think, what else could Mr. West gift us in a week’s time? Well, Yeezus for Adidas is “what.” West’s show, which featured West’s sister-in-law Kylie Jenner as one of its models, was daring and what some might say ground breaking with his see through designs. While the show was definitely one of a kind, it was West’s tiny guest that stole the show. North West, the fashion designer’s 19-month-old daughter broke out into tears during her father’s show that captured the attention of show-goers and photographers alike. It wasn’t until mommy Kim Kardashian took Nori from her front row seat that guests turned their attention back to the show.

3. If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late. No, seriously, you missed it because in Beyoncé fashion, Drake released a surprise album entitled If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late (catch my earlier pun) just before midnight on Friday. The album, which features 17 new songs that can be bought on iTunes, came hours after Drake dropped a 14-minute short film entitled Jungle. The surprise album, which also doubles as a “mixtape,” was released six years to the day, since the rapper released his last mixtape, So Far Gone.

IDRTITL is already facing controversy though after Drake called out his label mate Tyga in “6pm in New York.” In the new song Drake raps, “Oh you tried, it’s so childish calling my name on the world stage. You need to act your age and not your girl’s age,” in reference to Tyga’s rumored relationship with 17-year-old girlfriend Kylie Jenner. Tyga then retaliated with a tweet firing back at his once friend writing, “…I know where u live and u know my address. U been ducking the fade from Brown.” Tyga later deleted the tweet.

4. Stevie Wonder’s musical tribute lives up to its name, Songs in the Key of Life — An All-Star Salute.” The star-studded show which is set to air on CBS February 16th featured performances from Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, Ed Sheeran, Pharrell Williams, Ariana Grande, Annie Lennox and John Legend just to name a few! The two-hour special, which was a Recording Academy tribute to the legendary musician, featured the singers going down the iconic singer’s catalogue of music. The A-list roster of performers were even joined by Wonder himself who performed “Superstition” and “You Are the Sunshine of My Life.”

5. Let all women rejoice as 50 Shades of Grey has finally hit theaters!  The long awaited erotic novel movie adaption debuted on Thursday with $8.6 million in late night showings; the second-highest late night showing for an R-rated film behind The Hangover 2‘s $10.4 million. The movie’s successful late night opening was just the best beginning as Universal is reporting Fifty Shades of Grey with a three-day weekend of $81.67M and a projected four-day of $90.658M. With such great weekend sales, Fifty Shades has tied up the record for best opening on Presidents Day Weekend.

6. Is that Uma Thurman? This was the question asked by many as the actress took the red carpet with a mysterious new looking face, sparking plastic surgery rumors. The Kill Bill star later explained her face change on the Today Show saying, “I know I look weird! I don’t know, I guess nobody liked my makeup.” Thurman’s makeup artist Troy Surratt also responded to critics telling Refinery29.com, “We experimented with the makeup. We did a much stronger brow and a bold lip for a French sort of feel.” Thurman additionally told the Today Show, “I’ve been doing this for years and years and years — people say things nice and they say things mean and it’s like whatever. You take the good with the bad.”

7. Raven-Symoné makes her television comeback. Symoné’s return to the small screen was featured on Empire as she was involved in the shows major plot-twist. (WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD). The former child star returned to TV playing the role of baby mama to Lucious’s gay son Jamal on Fox’s new hit show. While her future involvement on the show is unknown, according to E!, Symoné is rumored to appear again before Empire’s March 4th season finale.

8. Emile Hirsch checks into rehab after being charged with felony assault on a female executive.  According to TMZ, the Girl Next Door actor allegedly attacked Paramount executive Daniele Bernfeld at a Sundance Film Festival party on January 25th.  Hirsch’s lawyer Robert Offer told the site, “Emile consumed an enormous amount of alcohol on the evening in question and he has no memory of what happened.” TMZ also reports that according to police, “Hirsch appeared intoxicated and Bernfeld why she looked ‘so tough’ and said she was a ‘rich kid’ who should not be at Sundance.” Bernfeld then told police she moved away from Hirsch to go sit with a friend at a table — and moments later, Hirsch came up from behind her and “put her in a chokehold.” It escalated even further Bernfeld claims, when Hirsch “pulled her across the table and onto the floor” and landed on top of her. While on top, he allegedly wrapped his hands around her neck and began to choke her. She said she felt as though “the front and back of her throat were touching and she remembers things going dark.” Hirsch’s court date is set for March 16th and if convicted, he can serve up to five years in prison.

9. Bobbi Kristina Brown update. Bobby Brown released a statement regarding the hospitalization of his daughter Bobbi Kristina. “At this time it is requested that the media cease speaking with unauthorized members of the family,” Brown’s lawyer Christopher Brown wrote in the statement. “The integrity of the events that led to the hospitalization of Bobbi Kristina must remain uncompromised. Various members of the family have provided media interviews, however, none of them are approved visitors to see Bobbi Kristina. None of them have firsthand knowledge of Bobbi Kristina‘s treatment and the medical staff at Emory University Hospital has not communicated with them.” Brown’s lawyer continued, “In particularly [sic], Jerod Brown aka Jerod Carter aka YF Kennedy, continues to makes [sic] statements and appear on television, however, he has not had any communication with Bobby Brown or the Houston family. He must be disregarded. Please do not attend any ‘meet and greet’ organized by Jerod Brown as he is unable to provide access to Bobbi Kristina or information on her condition. This is a criminal investigation and we do not need this side show. We continue to request privacy in this matter. We thank everyone that supports Bobbi Kristina and God is hearing our prayers.”

10. Valentine’s Day may be over, but love is definitely still in the air, and the proof is in this week’s Hollywood baby announcements. Shark attack survivor and pro-surfer Bethany Hamilton announced that she and her husband Adam Dirks are expecting their first child. From one pregnancy announcement to the next, Jane The Virgin star Justin Baldoni and his wife Emily had arguably the cutest pregnancy announcement which was an almost ten-minute clip that showed the couple sharing their good news with their friends and family. The week also featured a few Hollywood baby births, with 7th Heaven’s Beverly Mitchell and hubby Michael Cameron sharing news that they have welcomed their second child. Also welcoming her second child was actress Liv Tyler and boyfriend David Gardner.

That completes another Entertainment10. Thanks for reading, collegiettes. See you next week as we discuss the close of another award season with news from The Oscars.
