10 Fun Things To Do This Spring Break Without Breaking The Bank!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCSD chapter.

With winter quarter soon coming to end there is nothing more on our minds than Spring Break! It’s one of the few times during the school year where there are virtually no worries other than to have FUN, FUN, and even more FUN! Here are some great ideas to help you have the best Spring Break ever without having to break the bank!

1) Get your tan on!

Now’s your chance to get a head start on that summer tan! Luckily we have the whole week off, leaving ample time to get started on your summer glow. Most people will be at work during this time, so these are one of the few times when the beaches shouldn’t be too crowded! Grab your sunscreen, surfboard, buddies, and hit the beach!

2) Movies

Always working hard at school doesn’t leave you a lot of free time to go to the movies, so this is your perfect chance to see the new releases before the hectic school schedule starts up again for spring quarter! Here are some movies coming out in March that you should definitely go see!

Unfinished Business, March 6th (Comedy)

Cinderella, March 13th (Adventure)

It Follows, March 13th (Horror)

Insurgent (sequel to Divergent!), March 20th (Action)

3) Try a new activity!

Do you ever see pictures on Facebook of people going parasailing or jet skiing and wish that could be you? Well it can! There are plenty of websites nowadays that offer plenty of deals on these types of activities, and most of the time they are for two people so you can always try things with friends! One great website to try out is groupon.com. This website offers tons of great deals on activities ranging from paddle boarding to horseback-riding to hot air balloon rides! There are tons of activities to choose from that will fit into any Spring Break budget!

4) Mini road trip!

Planning a trip with friends seems to always come with a lot of difficulties, but it doesn’t have to! You don’t need to break the bank to go on a mini road trip with your friends. Luckily, we live in California and no matter which way you drive up the coast, you’re bound to find tons of fun things to do and beautiful places to visit. Even if you can’t afford to go on that cruise you wanted to go on or that trip to Vegas some of your friends are going on, that doesn’t mean you still can’t go exploring! Gather up a few of your closest friends and pack the car! Do some research and pick some cities you want to visit as you drive up or down the coast. Even if it’s not Mexico or Vegas, visiting a new place can be just as fun! Try a new restaurant, visit a new beach, and ask the locals what they do for fun. The possibilities are endless!

5) Read

It might seem like all we do is read while we are at school but when was the last time you actually read a book for fun? Sometimes we forget how enjoyable reading can be when we don’t get to decide what it is we are reading! Take that book you’ve been wanting to read to the beach or the pool to get some rays while you indulge your mind! If you’re looking for a funny read, I recommend Mindy Kaling’s Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? If you’re more into thrillers, I recommend Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl – way better than the movie! If romance is more your thing then definitely anything by Nicholas Sparks.

6) Sports!

Whether you’re playing it or watching it, sports are always a fun past-time! Hockey is in full swing during March so take the drive to go watch your favorite SoCal team, whether it be the Anaheim Ducks or the Los Angeles Kings, play at their home stadium. If baseball is more of your thing, don’t fret! The San Diego Padres will be starting off their season in March! Tickets are always cheapest to go to a week-day game and you can find cheap tickets for both teams on stubhub.com. Whichever sport you decide to watch nothing is more exciting than being there live for all of the action!

7) Catch up on much needed girl time!

With everyone having such different schedules it can be hard to find time to have all your friends together in one place but since everyone has the week off, this is the perfect time to get all your friends together for some much needed girl time! Make some homemade margaritas, get some chips and salsa, some gossip magazines, and hit the pool or backyard for some perfect catch-up time with your girlfriends!

8) Volunteer

School can take up so much time that we don’t always have the time we wish we had to volunteer and help out in our community. Giving back to our community is so important though, and Spring Break is the perfect time to do so! Whether it’s helping out at the local animal shelter or just picking up trash on the beach, it feels good to give back to our community and it can be even more fun you make it a group activity and bring your friends!

9) Go on a Hike

Going on a hike is a great way to hang out with friends while also working on getting that summer bod ready!  Instead of trying out the hikes nearby, go on one that you’ve never been to before. Do some research and find one that has a beautiful view or a radiant waterfall. Pack a bag for a picnic, grab some friends, and hit the trails! Going on a new hike rather than one you’ve done a hundred times before is always more fun!

10) FOOD.

Food. Enough said. Spring Break is the perfect time to go on an adventure and try some new foods! Ever had a cheeseburger taco? No? Well, now is your chance. Cronut? No? Well, you’re missing out and need to try it NOW. Grab some friends and go try a new place! To save some money try checking out Groupon for local deals. They always have good deals on great places and can also be a wonderful source to look for new places to try. The possibilities are endless with this one!
