Ready for the Red Carpet

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Adelphi chapter.

Sometimes, us girls are not given enough credit. Every day we tame the mane, attempt to wear a somewhat socially acceptable outfit (unless it’s finals week, of course), do our makeup to shield the world from the giant eye-bags that would be a dead giveaway that we didn’t actually get eight hours of sleep last night (or any at all), keep our eyebrows on fleek, and we keep everything primmed and proper all the way to our perfectly manicured fingertips. Okay, if you’re an average girl, you know that this isn’t the reality about…99.99% of the time. But if you have a special event to attend, whether it be a date, a formal, or you just want to get glammed-up for a girls’ night out, here’s a checklist on how to look red-carpet ready, regardless or where you’re going.

Let’s head to the closet to pick out the main attractions of your entire look…

1. The Outfit

How can you expect to look red-carpet ready without the perfect outfit? The outfit is the main focus on your entire look, so choose wisely! If you’re going to a more black-tie event such as a formal, a dance, or a soiree, you may want to gravitate towards a long, classic gown that many A-listers rock on the red carpet. If you’re going on a date or out with the girls, you may opt for a feminine minidress or an edgy jumpsuit. Whatever the occasion, use it as an excuse to rock your style!

2. Shoes

Are diamonds really a girls next friend or is there something else that every girl might fantasize about? (Hint: This is not referring to Christain Grey.) Yes, that’s right! It’s shoes! No outfit is complete without that perfect pair of shoes. When I think red-carpet ready, the first pair of shoes that come to my mind are the three s’s: sexy, strappy stilletos. However, it’s understandable that heels aren’t every girl’s forté. After all, sometimes comfort comes first! From a classic pair of patent leather pumps to a pair of sparkly metallic flats, the possibilities are endless!

3. Accessorize!

Last but not least, you got to add the finishing touches to your outfit with accessories! If your outfit’s more on the neutral side (one color, simple design, no outrageous patterns), be bold and throw on a statement necklace, a large cocktail ring, a pair of dangly earrings, or an over-the-top clutch. Little pieces can add a huge WOW! factor to your overall look. If your outfit’s already loud enough as it is, keep your accessory choices more toned down with some classic studs, a dainty necklace, or a classic watch.

Now that your outfit is officially complete, it is time to head over to the vanity!

4. Tame that mane!

It’s absolutely insane how much a hairstyle can change one’s entire look. If you’re looking to make an impression, step out of your comfort zone! If your hair’s usually pin-straight, grab that curling wand and add some big, voluminous waves. If you tend to rock your natural curls, flatiron your hair and your friends might not even recognize your sleek new ‘do. If you’re feeling extra creative, try something unique like a waterfall braid or a “I woke up like this” updo like this one in Blair Fowler’s YouTube tutorial:

5. Make your face

Okay, we don’t mean literally; we mean make-up (and things that also go under that category, such as having your brows done). Spice up your make-up look with a bright lip color (red’s a classic choice for the red carpet, duh), some bold brows (but don’t overdo them!), and some winged eyeliner in order to enhance your natural features. However, make sure everything’s in balance. If you’re going to wear a smokey eye, it’s probably best not to do an over-contoured cheek, a bright lip, and a bright blush color. Remember that make-up is there to bring out your natural beauty, not to completely cover it!

6. Nails

One of my favorite parts- nail polish. Nail polish provides a limitless realm to express your creativity. Do you want to go with French, metallic, matte, or a classic glossy cream-finish? You can do square, round, almond, or even more dramatic! Nail polish is something that a lot of people overlook, but if chosen correctly, can really tie an entire look together and make you look even more polished.

Now that you’re done with this checklist, you’re ready to hit the red carpet!

… or wherever you’re headed. I hope this article helped you all out while getting ready for a big event. Although it’s fun to dabble in the world of beauty and fashion, don’t ever forget that all you ladies out there are already beautiful just the way you are!

Hey everyone! I'm Juls (yes, short for Julie), and I'm a junior biology major with a double minor in chemistry and mathematics at Adelphi University. I'm also a writer and the head of the editorial team for Her Campus Adelphi. I've been running for 6 years and am a (beginner) Bikram yoga junkie, so I guess you can say I'm also a fitness enthusiast. If I'm not out for a run or in the yoga studio, you can catch me volunteering at my local hospital, laughing with my friends while out for coffee, or tuning in for the latest episode of Dancing With the Stars. Feel free to say hi if you see me around; I'm most likely that girl with a pair of sunglasses on top of her head even if it's cloudy outside.
