Every Student’s Guide to the Best D.C. Staycation

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at American chapter.

With spring break right around the corner and no official vacation plans, life can be pretty scary. But, it doesn’t have to be. Truth be told, traveling can be such a headache – between booking hotels, packing, flying and all of the planning, sometimes it’s easier just to stay put. Stay-cations are a great option for students ona  low budget, who just want to enjoy their surroudings. For those of you staying in the area over break, no need to fear. Below are six great ways to spend your D.C. stay-cation!

1. Visit all the D.C. Landmarks You Missed During Welcome Week

Whether it be running from class to class, traveling to work, interning, juggling two sports and attending club meetings, it’s safe to say that A.U. students have pretty hectic schedules. And we don’t blame you, it can be really hard to find the time to explore the D.C. area. Spring break is the perfect opportunity to explore all the D.C. landmarks that you typically take for granted, like the National Mall, Smithsonian Museums, the National Zoo, or the White House – many of which are free and easily accessible via Metro.

2. Invite Friends

While D.C. may be your temporary home, don’t forget it can also be an ideal vacation destination! Invite your friends (and family) from back from to come see The District and show them all of your favorite spots around the city.

3.     Check Out D.C. Events

Washington is constantly hosting events and festivals throughout the city. Washington.org is a great place to search for local events – you can even sort through events based on date, event type, neighborhood, and price range. If you’re into art, check out the amBIGuity exhibit at the National Building Museum. If you like films, the Jewish Film Festival will be wrapping up during Spring Break. But if music is more your thing, check out the highly anticipated musical, Kid Victory. It’ll be showing in Arlington over spring break. If you’re over 21, enjoy drinks as you explore alcohol use throughout American history at the William G. McGowan Theater on Constitution Avenue. In a city as diverse as D.C., there’s something for everyone!

4.     Take a Mini Trip

D.C. is only about an hour drive from Baltimore, 2½ hours away from Hershey Park, and a 3½ hour drive from Virginia Beach. D.C. has an extremely convenient location – you won’t have to drive more than a few hours to get to beaches, amusement parks, or big East Coast cities. Rent a car or get cheap Greyhound tickets for a day trip!

5.     R&R

You’re spring break doesn’t have to be scene out of Spring Breakers. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to relax and enjoy some time to yourself. Catch up on sleep or your favorite TV shows!

6.     Try New Restaurants

Unfortunately, TDR will be closed over spring break, so you may have to explore food options outside of MGC. Take advantage, and explore the different neighborhoods of D.C.! And no, the Chipotle in Tenleytown doesn’t count. Every neighborhood in DC offers its own unique array of dining options, so find your favorite. Get started on your bucket list now, and cross some restaurants off your list!
