As college students, the struggle of penny pinching is real, but you don’t have to let your beauty routine go down the drain because of your tight budget. Here are a few easy DIY projects to save your wallet.
1. Decorated bobby pinsOkay, I admit the task of DIY-ing bobby pins initially seems a little daunting. I mean, I can barely draw a straight line. How could I possibly decorate something so small? But further Pinterest-searching revealed I had nothing to worry about because there are so many options for these adorable DIYs! My favorite is gluing small jewels on the ends of bobby pins for a cute and easy beauty DIY. But you could go even further by gluing earrings onto bobby pins for a vintage look, or you could paint small designs on them or maybe even a combination of both! Regardless, your hair will look flawless with this subtle and adorable beauty DIY.
2. Reusable containersI consider it jarring how easy it is to reuse containers as beauty hacks! All puns aside, reusing containers in ways you didn’t think of before is a beauty DIY every college girl needs to learn. I mean, have you ever actually heard a college girl say, “Wow, I have too much room in my bathroom?” I didn’t think so. Try using mason jars to hold makeup brushes or old candle containers to hold your mascara, eyeliner and concealer. Tidy up your bathroom space, DIY style!
3. DIY HeadbandsSo maybe your New Years resolution to work out more isn’t going exactly as planned. Too many exams and Netflix releases have gotten in the way, and face it, you need some serious motivation. Well, revamp your workout style by making some DIY headbands of your own! These can vary in style, craft and skill, but the easiest tutorial I found was to make your own twisted headband. The instructions are easy to follow and don’t require too many materials. First, take two strips of fabric and cut them about 4 by 20 inches long. Then, fold the strips in half and connect the fabric by sewing or using a fabric adhesive to create two “tubes.” Then put the two strips in an “X,” fold the strips in half, sew the bottom, and you’ve created your own DIY headband! Now get to the gym and show that cute thing off!
4. DIY LotionMy skin is really sensitive when it comes to beauty products, so I can back this DIY lotion recipe 100 percent! As long as you purchase the few items needed organically, this is a product that is nourishing, healthy for your skin and easy to do on a college budget. All you need are the following ingredients:-4 cups of oil (Olive oil is best for me but this can be supplemented with coconut oil or olive oil)-3 tablespoons beeswax-3/4 cup of water or herbal tea (keep these at room temperature)-An optional essential oil (for fragrant purposes only)
Here’s how to make it:1. First, melt the beeswax and the olive oil together on low heat in a pan, and stir for about five minutes or until the beeswax melts.2. Next, add the water and beeswax/olive oil mixture together in a food processor or blender. Put the setting on low, and then slowly mix it together until it has a creamy blend.3. Last, put it in a container and let it cool overnight in the fridge. After it cools, you’ll have your very own handmade lotion!
5. DIY Nail Polish ColorMaking your own nail polish color is something really awesome I stumbled across a while ago. Unfortunately, it was during that phase when I only wore crazy neon colors on my nails, but now I use this DIY all the time. All you are doing is blending eye shadow into clear nail polish to create the hue of your choice. It’s ridiculously simple and customizable. Simply buy a bottle of clear nail polish, and gently mix in some eye shadow to create the color of your choice. I can only imagine the outfits that I can match my nail polish to with this DIY hack!
