Oscars Best & Worst Dressed

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Seattle U chapter.

As a college student who slips into sweatpants whenever she can, it seems pretty ironic for me to comment on the dresses at the Oscars. That being said, I do have an appreciation for good dress sense. Let’s get into it.

Best

Rosamund Pike – This girl is straight slaying in this dress. The texture and detailing elevates the dress and makes for a memorable gown. I love the contrast of the slit and sharp angles on the midriff with the rounded bust.

Reese Witherspoon – What a gorgeous silhouette! This is such a timeless gown and it’s tailored to her perfectly. The Bardot neckline is tremendously flattering, and both black panels add visual interest.

Jamie Chung – I seriously can’t get enough of this dress. The navy overlay over the pinky-nude gown is so elegant. The high neckline is gorgeous, and I love how the beadwork on the bodice just draws your eyes upwards. The bursts of shimmer on the dress are beautiful, but not overpowering. This is easily my favorite of the night.

Jennifer Aniston – This strapless nude dress looks absolutely incredible and the tone doesn’t wash her out. The beading is translucent and flattering, and the way that it swirls through the dress adds dimension. The other thing I love about this dress is that it’s sheer but tasteful. P.S. I swear Jennifer Aniston has her hands on some crazy anti-aging potion or something.

Anna Kendrick – This dress is so elegant. I love the way the dress wraps around the neckpiece and adds dimension to what could otherwise be a fairly standard dress. Plus that keyhole makes everything a little edgier.

Jennifer Lopez – If there’s anyone who can pull off a dangerously deep v, it’s Jennifer Lopez. She’s done it before, and she’ll do it again. Call me crazy, but I actually think the deep v is really elegant and provides the perfect hourglass proportion, balancing out the full skirt. The tone compliments her skin beautifully, and the understated jewelry/ponytail allows the dress to stand out. The fabric looks divine, and the beadwork is just gorgeous. I love this one.

Emma Stone – It may be an unpopular opinion, but I actually really like the sleeves, and the angled slit really compliments the flow of the beading. I also love how she chose to pair it with a daring lip color. You go, Emma! Take risks!

Lupita Nyongo – There are 6,000 PEARLS ON THIS DRESS (and cost more than $150,000 to make). That dress is worth more than my tuition. I can’t. Either way, Lupita rocks just about everything she wears.

Zoe Saldana – As you can probably see, there’s a strong nude trend going on at the Oscars. I like how she can pull off the dusty rose color, and that structured bodice combined with the draping is a nice contrast.

Kerry Washington – I love the way this dress is structured. The textured skirt actually pairs quite nicely with the satin bodice, and the peplum isn’t too exaggerated and looks quite elegant.

Honorable Mentions: Scarlet Johannson, Keira Knightly, Oprah, Margot Robbie, Behati Prinsloo, Jessica Chastain

Menswear

Eddie Redmayne – What is there to say? Eddie looks flawless. His suit is tailored perfectly and fits him like a dream. Plus the navy color contrasts nicely with his red hair. 10/10.

Josh Hutcherson – Josh is looking great here. I love the understated black buttons and the size of the bow tie. The suit really accentuates his proportions but is not as crisp as the others, but I think that’s what makes it charming.

Channing Tatum – Again, I’m really digging these satin lapels. His suit fits him incredibly well, that bowtie is perfectly proportioned, and the pocket square is a solid touch.
