It’s mid-Milan fashion week, and I can’t wait to see what new looks hit the runway. Both in New York and London, we saw so many amazing ensembles – the designers were innovative, fresh, and inspiring, so it’s no surprise that new trends emerged left and right. New Yorkers and Londoners obviously have their own unique senses of style, but what truly makes a trend in my book? If we see it here in Manhattan and from the designers across the pond. All you have to do to predict next winter’s hot trends is look at what New York and London have in common.
Futurism
Both New York and London embraced sleek, modern silhouettes and futuristic color palettes (whether that means all white, chrome, or pops of primary colors).
New York: Misha Nonoo, Dion Lee
London: Peter Pilotto, Jonathan Saunders
Power Furs
This year fur (or faux-fur, we hope) is all over the runway, in the form of powerful and often colorful all-fur coats.
New York: Jason Wu, Michael Kors, Altuzarra
London: Gareth Pugh, House of Holland, Ashley Williams
Shine Bright
Glitter, sequins, and sparkling fabrics made for some gorgeous looks this year. While New York’s gliterry gowns looked strikingly similar, Londoners played with some different colors and textures.
New York: Marc Jacobs, Ralph Lauren, Zac Posen
London: David Koma, Christopher Kane, Vivienne Westwood
Leather Coats
Leather jackets are a personal fav, but this year NY and London took it to the next level with long (in some cases floor-length) shiny toppers
New York: Protagonist, The Row
London: J.W. Anderson, Topshop Unique
Layered Turtlenecks
We saw tons (literally tons) of turtlenecks under dresses at NYFW, but when it happened again at London, I knew this trend was here to stay!
New York: Rachel Zoe, Banana Republic
London: Barbara Cassola, Toga
Winter Florals
Wish you could wear florals all year ’round? These designers prove you can!
New York: Zac Posen, Alice & Olivia, Diane von Furstenburg
London: Erdem, Vivienne Tam, Simone Rocha
Brocade
This old-fashioned fabric had a total renaissance this year – everyone was hype about it’s appearance at London fashion week, but if you look at shows from New York, you can see it was popular there as well.
New York: Alice & Olivia, J. Mendel
London: Mary Katrantzou, Simone Rocha
