7 Things to Do in DC over Spring Break

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Georgetown chapter.

Just because you are staying in D.C. doesn’t mean you can’t have some fun. Treat this week as a staycation and do all the stuff you said you would do, but never did. Here are some of our picks on how to spend your break in DC.

Go to a Concert

If you haven’t been to 9:30 club before now is your chance. You can’t go four years in DC without saying you’ve been there at least once. If you aren’t feeling the bands performing there, there are also some other great venues.

Check out an art exhibit

There are so many amazing (and free!) art museums in D.C. Interested in the Classics? Check out the Phillips Collection or the National Gallery of Art. More into modern art? Then head to the Hirshhorn. Don’t forget the Freer and Sackler Galleries, the National Museum of African Art, the Art Museum of the Americas, and the American Art Museum.

See a show

You can also check out a play. The Kennedy Center hosts free shows at 6pm every day. Or explore DC’s other theaters and theater companies. You can try the Folger, Signature Theatre, and the Shakespeare Theatre Company. If none of those sound interesting, there are numerous other theatres you can attend.

Watch a Sports Game

The Washington Capitals and the Washington Wizards are still playing. Now is the perfect time to catch a game.

Explore

Are there areas of DC you have heard of but never got a chance to check out? Well now is your chance. Try Union Market, Petworth, H Street Corridor, Eastern Market, and Columbia Heights. Basically head out of Georgetown and wander. You may find your next favorite study spot.

Eat

DC has a blooming food scene. If you aren’t afraid to spend a little more cash, definitely wait in line and eat at Rose’s Luxury. It was named America’s best new restaurant in 2014, and the food lives up to that name. If you are looking for a snack or a coffee spot, head to Compass Coffee, District Doughnut, Uprising Muffin Company, Bread Furst, Rare Sweets, or all the other amazing places in DC. If you want to have fun with it, spend the week finding the best doughnuts, or best coffee. You’ll explore, and learn a lot about the city in the process.

Support local businesses

Lastly, no matter what you do, please try to support all the amazing local businesses in DC. Visit local coffee shops, shop local boutiques. Even if you are only spending four years in DC, help the DC community grow and thrive.
