Meet the Writer: Doctor to be Mónica C. Abreu

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UPRM chapter.

In celebration of Women’s Month, and our reader’s loyalty, we want to give you the inside scoop on the Her Campus UPRM team. Have you ever wondered who are the women behind Her Campus? What motivates us to write? What are our passions and goals? Throughout this month, we will be featuring some of our writers, in order for you to get to know us better.

In our first feature we want to introduce one of our most outspoken, spontaneous and genuine contributors, Biology senior and doctor to be Mónica C. Abreu.

Name: Mónica Cristina Abreu Díaz

Major: Biology

Graduation Year: May 2015

HC: Why you decided to join Her Campus?

M: I learned about the chapter through my best friend and I loved the idea from the very start, it is a tool to provide help and advice for the college community. Our articles are very practical and they tend to facilitate the daily lives of college girls from freshmen to seniors.

HC: You graduate this May and are heading towards medical school. Give us three words that describe the Mónica that started college four years ago versus the Mónica that will soon leave, after successfully accomplishing one of her life goals.

M: It is hard to choose only three words that describe the old Mónica. I have always been determined to become a doctor, but my first year I was stumbling upon things. To narrow it down to three words, I was  determined, curious, because I wanted to make sure I lived my college experience to the fullest and was a bit bold, back then I had no filters. Three years later, the words that describe me are determined, focused, as now I’m completely sure of what I want and I sort of became an over-achiever along the way.

HC: The P&G campaign #LikeAGirl has revolutionized social media. How do you think this campaign will help our growing generation of women overcome gender discrimination and society limitations upon women? What effect you think this campaign will have in the rising generation of men?

M: Well, growing up I remember many people telling me that if I wanted to be a doctor I had to choose an “easier” specialty, because otherwise I would not be able to balance my career and having a family. I am on my way to prove everybody wrong! I believe that I can have the best of both worlds. They make us believe that our future spins around the possibility of finding a prince charming and creating a family. Life is so much more! Women can have as many possibilities as any man- having a family should not be the sole purpose of our existence. This campaign is tearing down those barriers for us!

The main obstacle for men growing up today is the way they are raised. Mothers, have somehow instilled in men “machismo.” These men grow up believing that they are superior to women in many ways. I believe it is going to be a shock for them to go out to a changing world that is finally seeing things the way they are, and were women are excelling.

HC: If you could choose what to write on your tomb, what will it be?

M: I have thought about it! I want them to write “I tried…” because I have lived my life based on that principle. Maybe I wasn’t the best at it, maybe I failed, but in the moment it was exactly what I wanted to do, what I thought was best, so I guess that would pretty much wrap it up, I always tried.
