Fashion Dilemma: Winter to Spring

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Portland chapter.

Winter to spring is a tough fashion switch. It’s not time to kiss our cozy sweaters goodbye, and the warming weather and blooming cherry blossoms make the decision about what to wear a real struggle. Especially since the Portland weather changes on the daily. Do I continue to wear sweaters and boots or do I whip out my sandals and dress? Should I wake up early and put some effort in my outfit or just rock the athleisure wear to my 9:15 again?  We have all been there before, but don’t fret because we have  you covered! Here are some tips to help you switch over your wardrobe so no matter the season you can continue being a fashionista!

1.  Take Inventory

Let’s be honest, we all have those clothes we think we’ll wear, but we never actually do. It’s time to say your final goodbyes because they are just taking up precious wardrobe space.  Have some gal pals over and host a fashion show of your current wardrobe. If it doesn’t get your vote or your friend’s votes then toss it in a pile to donate. Some of your spring clothes from last year might not really float your boat anymore or you might have grown out of them. Instead of thinking that the adorable floral dress from last year still fits you; be on the safe side and just try it on.

Once you have gone through your closet, it’s easier to see what you actually need to buy.  There’s nothing worse than buying a pair of white shorts only to go home and realize you already have four pairs tucked away in your dresser.

2.  Get Some Inspiration

If you’re anything like me, not knowing what new clothes to buy is a tale as old as time.  Do I keep buying the same top I always do? If I buy this is, it going to look like I’m trying to rock Throwback Thursdays every day?

Don’t worry, fashion inspiration is all around us! Look at what store mannequins are wearing or people watch for ideas. Pinterest is always an option, and besides who doesn’t love an excuse to do some quality pinning? Some clothing websites even have look books to show you possible outfits which is very helpful.

3. Hit The Mall

The next step on the journey of transitioning your closet is to the go shopping. Go to the mall or take a trip to some rockin’ thrift stores! A lot of stores are having sales right now for their new spring lines so check out the weekly ads and websites of your favorite stores.

While you’re shopping, go for the classics that you love, but don’t be afraid to go outside your comfort zone. Remember to keep an open mind. Who knows? Your new favorite shirt might be something totally different from your usual style. Before saying no to a piece of clothing, try it on! I know that trying on clothes is not always the most thrilling experience, but it’s better to try on something at the store than buying it and hating it when you try it on at home. Also, remember this tip that Sandra Bullock says in the Blind Side, “If you don’t absolutely love it in the store, you won’t wear it.” So true, Sandra!

A good wardrobe starts with variety.  Unless it’s part of your uniform, there is no reason for you to only own white tee shirts and dark denim jeans. Before buying a piece of clothing think of an outfit that would include it. There’s no point of buying a top if you can’t think of what to wear it with. If you can’t think of more than 3 ways you can wear it, then chances are you shouldn’t buy it.

Also, shopping is way more fun if you bring a buddy! A trusty pal can help you with your purchasing decisions. Especially since the mirrors in the fitting rooms aren’t always the best; it’s good to have a second opinion. Have them take a picture of you striking a pose in the outfit to get a better sense of how it looks since dressing rooms aren’t known for having the best lighting, either.

4. Don’t Forget Accessories

Clothes aren’t the only thing that get switched up with the different seasons. Don’t forget to keep your eyes out for some fun accessories or a pair of super cute shoes! You don’t have to drop a lot of your hard-earned money on accessories, though! Forever 21 is one of my go-to’s for inexpensive jewelry because they have so much to choose from for under $10. Switching up your accessories is an easy way to get multiple outfits out of the same pieces of clothing. Add some accessories, like a statement necklace, for a pop of color and voila you have a brand new outfit!

5. Go Home and Welcome the Newest Members of Your Wardrobe

The fun doesn’t stop as soon as you leave the stores.  One thing I love to do when I get home, is to try on different outfits that incorporate my new pieces.  An added bonus is that now you have some new outfits that you know work, so if you’re in a pinch you have cute outfits in mind.

Hope these tips help you out when transitioning your wardrobe from winter to spring!
