Old Dominion: Catch The Next Big Country Supergroup On Tour

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at CNU chapter.

There is nothing better than catching a band right before they have made it big. The next artist to watch and soon-to-be country supergroup, Old Dominion, will be heard on your local radio. Their newest single, “Break Up With Him,” will be the band’s first single with major radio play and is no doubt a product of their recent signing with RCA Nashville, a record label distributed by Sony Music Nashville. Here are some reasons why they are about to reach the tipping point of becoming the next big breakout country band.

Named one of Rolling Stone’s “10 Artists You Need To Know,” Old Dominion has been touring with the likes of Brett Eldredge, Chase Rice, and The Band Perry. They have honed in on what makes them special: their live show and catchy, upbeat songs. Not only are they playing hits they have co-written and some of their Old Dominion originals, but they take time to meet with their fans after shows at their merchandise table.

Recently, they were tapped by none other than Kenny Chesney for 17 tour dates this summer on The Big Revival Tour. They will not only be accompanying Chesney, but a host of other artists such as Eric Church, Brantley Gilbert, and Jake Owen to name a few. Chesney has been noted for taking out acts before they come into country superstardom. This list includes people such as Carrie Underwood, Eric Church, and Kacey Musgraves; country stars who since then have created their own successful tours.

Another reason to appreciate this up and coming band is derived from their name. Virginians will recognize the state’s nickname, Old Dominion. Comprised of four Virginians and one Michigander, the group is a homegrown band from the south that got together all by chance. Although most of the band members knew each other back in Virginia, the band did not entirely form until all members found themselves in Nashville pursuing their own individual careers in music. It was there that Old Dominion was born, and they started gaining recognitions as songwriters.

In terms of songwriting, the band has already been successful. They are one of the few groups left in Nashville that actually write, record, and perform their own songs. They have the capacity to write hit songs, which has been proven time and time again. They have created songs for The Band Perry, Dierks Bentley, Tyler Farr, and Kenny Chesney. If lucky, one will hear some of the hits in Old Dominion’s live show, where they showcase their own songs and the songs they have co-written. Their biggest success as a band thus far has been topping SiriusXM’s  “The Highway’s Hot 45 Countdown” twice, with their newly released aforementioned single, “Break Up With Him.” Two other songs highlighted on Old Dominion’s self-titled EP have made it onto the countdown, including “Dirt on a Road” and “Shut Me Up.”

If all of these reasons aren’t enough for you to go out and buy yourself their new EP, catch them live this spring or summer while they tour with some of your favorite country artists. You can check out their tour schedule here. If you are a believer that a great live show makes a great artist, you will not be disappointed.
