5 Fashion Films You Must See

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UVA chapter.

When you think about movies concerning fashion, perhaps the first one that comes to mind is “The Devil Wears Prada.” This is with good reason – the film was critically acclaimed, as well as a commercial success, and still remains quite popular. However, there are a lot more fashion films than one would think, and if you are looking to learn about how the fashion world operates as well as the lives of the designers that you know and love, check these five films out:

The September Issue

The documentary film released in 2009 depicts the production process of the 2007 U.S. Vogue issue, which featured actress Siena Miller. For those crumbling to be a fly on the wall within the Vogue offices in New York, this film allowed for just for that. It includes famed designers such as Vera Wang and the late Oscar de la Renta, models such as Daria Werbowy and Chanel Iman, and photographers such as Patrick Demarchelier (who also made an appearance in “The Devil Wears Prada”), and Mario Testino. It displays the intensity and fervor that goes into producing the largest and, arguably, the most important issue that Vogue publishes, and more Anna Wintour that the public typically gets to see.

Valentino: The Last Emperor

The documentary film released in 2008 details the life of celebrated fashion designer Valentino Garavani, whose career has spanned a number of decades. It goes on to show both the professional and personal life of Valentino, as well as his relationships with the various individuals involved with his label and the fashion industry as a whole. Most times, fashion designers choose to have their pieces speak for them, so it is always great to have a peek into their world, observe their inspirations, and see what their plans are for each season. This film does that with Valentino.

Coco Before Chanel

For anyone that happens to be a fan of French movies as well as Chanel, you most likely found yourself watching this film. Just as the title states, this film serves a means of portraying the life of the woman who established one of the most noted and well-regarded fashion brands of all time. For those that are more so familiar with the label than the designer, they will be surprised to know that Coco Chanel was an orphan and that she was not wealthy. “Coco Before Chanel” separates the designer from the brand and allows viewers to learn about the individual behind the fashion giant.

Bill Cunningham New York

The 2010 documentary film follows the famed New York Times photographer, whom you have probably seen pictures of riding his bike with a camera in tow. Anyone that is a fan of street photography, fashion photography, and street style will love this film as it demonstrates the process that Cunningham undertakes when approaching his work and the people that love him from Anna Wintour to Michael Kors.

Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has To Travel

The 2011 documentary film depicts the life of Diana Vreeland, who is known for her involvement with Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue. Like the other documentary films listed, it provides a look into Vreeland’s career, family, and personal life as well as her passions, ambitions, and hopes for her legacy. It is a wonderful film for fans of Vreeland as well as those looking to learn more about those responsible for making Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar the famed magazines that they are today.
