The common phrase at McGill that students live by is “work hard play hard,” so why not reward yourself by making your own homemade cocktails? Although the occasional bar night is essential, sometimes it’s beneficial to save a little extra money if you’re on a budget. Also, it’s fun and creative to try out some new drinks that you can experiment with.

Here are 6 cocktails that are easy to make and absolutely delicious.

1. Blue Hawaiian : Disclaimer, your tongue may turn blue so choose wisely when to make this one ladies

This cocktail requires:

  • 1 oz light rum
  • 2 oz pineapple juice
  • 1 oz blue Curacao liqueur
  • 1 oz cream of coconut
  • 1 slice pineapple

Directions:

  • Blend light rum, blue curacao, pineapple juice, and cream of coconut with one cup ice in an electric blender at high speed.
  • Pour contents into a glass.
  • Decorate with the slice of pineapple or other fruit.

2. Mojito :A classic and so simple to make, plus it’s the best party drink!

This cocktail requires:

  • 10 fresh mint leaves
  • 1/2 lime, cut into 4 wedges
  • 2 tablespoons white sugar, or to taste
  • 1 cup ice cubes
  • 1 1/2 fluid ounces white rum
  • 1/2 cup club soda

Directions:

  • Place mint leaves and 1 lime wedge into a glass. Crush the mint and lime.
  • Add 2 more lime wedges and the sugar, and crush again to release the lime juice.
  • Do not strain the mixture.
  • Fill the glass almost to the top with ice and pour the rum over the ice, and fill the glass with carbonated water.
  • Stir, taste, and add more sugar if desired.
  • Garnish with the remaining lime wedge.

3. Chocolate Martini: This is such a decadent drink (and probably the most amazing cocktail I’ve ever had).

This cocktail requires:

  • Sweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 1/2 ounces vanilla vodka (chilled)
  • 1 1/2 ounces white creme de cacao
  • 1 chocolate of choice
  • Chocolate liqueur

Directions:

  • Wet the rim of a chilled martini glass with water, then dip the rim in cocoa powder (optional).
  • In a cocktail shaker half filled with ice, add the vodka and creme de cacao.
  • Shake vigorously and pour into the martini glass.
  • Drop chocolate into the glass and top with a splash of chocolate liqueur.

4. Lemon-drop Martini :This very James Bondesque cocktail is perfect for a fancier pre, or a ladies cocktail night! Either way it’s fun and easy to make

  • This cocktail requires:
  • 1/12 ounce of vodka
  • 1/2 ounce of triple sec
  • 1 teaspoon of superfine sugar (and sugar for the martini rim)
  • 3/4 ounce of lemon juice
  • 4-5 ice cubes
  • Lemon twist

Directions:

  • Chill martini glasses in freezer for at least 10 minutes before serving.
  • Place Vodka, Triple Sec, lemon juice and sugar into a cocktail shaker with 4-5 ice cubes and shake for 30 seconds.
  • Run the lemon twist around the edge of the chilled martini glass and dunk in a small amount of sugar for a coated rim.
  • Pour the strained martini into the chilled glasses and serve.

5. Malibu Barbie: Invented by one of my friends Ailsa Crook, it is actually featured on the menu at a restaurant in Kingston, Ontario!

  • This cocktail requires:
  • One shot of Malibu
  • One shot of raspberry sour puss
  • Pineapple juice
  • Cranberry juice
  • Sprite
  • Lime on the side
  • A drizzle of grenadine

6. Sangria: This homemade (personal invention) of sangria is a little different to the classic sangria but it’s delicious

  • This cocktail requires:
  • White Moscato wine
  • Your own choice of berries
  • Either a dash or gingerale or soda water
  • Icecubes (optional)

Directions:

  • Add all the ingredients to taste and be sure to let it sit for a little bit to let the taste of the berries kick in!

Enjoy Collegiettes!
