Students Building the Waterloo Community

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wilfrid Laurier chapter.

Beyond its many local charms and pleasant boutiques, Waterloo is a city that houses amazing opportunities. This university town is where passions are discovered, young lives are inspired, and innovations take place. There are many ways in which students are creating communities in this town, and a few have stood out for our staff team. Read on to discover why we’re proud to be a part of this amazing community, and look forward to seeing more students discover and take part in developing its roots!

Community Volunteering

Volunteering in the city means building community relationships and knowing what’s going on in town. The Summer Lights Festival, Night Shift, and the many start-ups at Communitech are just a few ways that students are building networks with passionate individuals in the city.

Entrepreneurship

Students have been taking innovative ideas and turning them into realities. Across the city, they have been creating communities built off of physical and mental nourishment, kinship, and a drive to make positive change together. Success Without Stress is a Laurier venture that strives to create not only a peaceful place for meditation, but also a community where people can discuss and raise awareness surrounding the stigma associated with mental health. A social venture at the University of Waterloo, The Gravity Chamber  is promoting the philosophy of physical culture and demonstrating that a community built on a shared passion and commitment can inspire people to grow together. These are the ways strong communities are created, and how students are doing it.

The First Year Experience

Gradually, we learn that success doesn’t mean just following the pathway we envisioned for ourselves. With every person we meet and every new experience we gain, the path is continuously being adjusted. Joining campus organizations with a blank canvas philosophy leads to immeasurable personal growth and opportunity. Residence First Year Learning Communities provide a space where students who share similar passions and interests can be a part of a community.

We’ve got a great group of students in this town. Make the most of it and get involved! There are always amazing opportunities. Have a community story to share? We want to hear it! Tweet us @HerCampusWLUCA!
