We already know that there are so many places to get a good cup of joe, especially in Athens. I love a good cappuccino, Frappuccino and mocha just as much as the next person, but I have actually found something I love even more than all of those fancy drinks. Give me a tall cup of black coffee, and my taste buds will dance. My brain will focus. My stomach will thank me. Oh yeah, and I’ll look really cool while I sip away.

Drinking black coffee can be intimidating. At first, it can be kind of gross. For me, black coffee became an acquired taste. It’s definitely worth getting over the first impression, because drinking your coffee John-Wayne-style provides numerous benefits.

1. Quick & Easy

You wake up late, throw on an outfit, and rush out the door. Now, you have to wait in a long line and arrive late to class, or you have to make the decision to skip your morning coffee. Rewind…jump out of bed, start a pot of coffee, and then throw on your outfit. When you drink your coffee black, you can quickly start the coffee maker while you get dressed. It doesn’t take you any additional time in the morning; you just fill your travel mug and go. There is no hassle with sugar, cream, or milk, or even worse: a long line at your favorite coffee shop.

2. Fatter Wallet

Brewing your own black coffee at home saves a ton of money, but even if you want to grab a cup from a local café, you will still save money if you drink your coffee black. Black coffee is often the cheapest item on the menu at a café, and black coffee refills are often free.

3. Coffee Aficionado

Is there anything cooler than the ability to distinguish different styles of coffee? Probably not. Black coffee may seem like a standardized good, but you will be surprised to find out that there are many different types of coffee. The beans to make coffee can come from a variety of places and can be roasted in a variety of ways. Drinking black coffee gives you a sixth sense of sorts; you will develop keen taste buds.

4. Cool Kids

I’m not sure why, but drinking black coffee is often seen as an impressive trait. I’m sure there is science out there somewhere to back this up, but just trust me. Drinking black coffee is utterly cool.

5. Whittle Your Middle

No cream, no sugar, no fat, and no calories. When you stop adding all of the extra junk to your coffee, it becomes a truly healthy beverage. Coffee increases your energy and alertness as well as your metabolism. It is safe to drink a cup of coffee before exercising, and it actually helps boost your energy while performing. But drinking coffee with cream and sugar is NOT beneficial to your health, and drinking a sugary beverage before working out will make you nauseous.

6. Bonding

Some of my favorite mornings have been spent leaning over a cup of coffee while having meaningful conversations with friends. I could spend hours sipping my coffee and chatting. Coffee dissolves morning grumpiness and allows conversation to flow.
