HCUK Campus Celebrity: Emily Brown

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UK chapter.
Name: Emily Brown
Age: 19
Year: Sophomore
Major: Business Management/History
Hometown: Frederick, Md.
Campus Celeb Status: Director of Media for the Student Activities Board

HC: How and why did you first get involved with SAB here at UK?
EB: I first got involved with SAB as an incoming freshman. I applied to be a committee chair, with hopes to get on the concerts committee, but I was instead placed on the promotions team. The letdown of not getting the position that I wanted completely changed my life. What I learned on the promotions team was a huge part of changing my career path and opening doors to dreams that I am so excited about having, and wouldn’t have if I hadn’t been placed on the promotions team as a freshman.

HC: What are your responsibilities as the Director of Media?
EB: The Director of Media is in charge of all social media promotions for SAB (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr, Snapchat, etc.). Aside from scheduling daily posts, responding to questions and managing the rest of social media, I also run live-tweet walls at events, do social media analytics and help with other promotional aspects of SAB.

HC: What accomplishment are you most proud of?
EB: Personally, I think any time that an event goes successfully and I know that I had a hand in promoting it, I am proud of that accomplishment. Just seeing students come to our events with their friends and have a great time is always worth all the hard work and long hours, because I know that we gave them a college memory they might never forget. As a team, whenever we pull off a huge event by working together, like Chance the Rapper or Jim Gaffigan, it’s so rewarding and makes me realize that I get to work with the best people.

HC: What has been the most rewarding about serving as the Director Of Media?
EB: Helping other students, especially underclassmen, find their place at UK. Being a new student here, I needed to find a place that fit my interests and surrounded me with good people and good opportunities, and I found that at SAB. Whenever we do chair interviews or talk to incoming freshman about the board, it makes me so happy to think that something I said or showed them might change their life, like SAB changed mine.

HC: What has been the most challenging aspect of this position?
EB: Most definitely time management. I always thought I was organized before, but being the Director of Media made me become so much more organized and aware of time management. Scheduling tweets, meeting with other SAB directors and advisors, and making sure that I am on top of my school work (SAB makes sure that school is always put first) means that you MUST be organized (and write EVERYTHING down)!

HC: What advice do you have for students at UK thinking about getting involved with the Student Activities Board?
EB: Do it! Especially if you are interested in event planning, promotions or are just looking for a really fun organization to get involved with on campus! It’s a lot of work, but there truly is a position for everyone that will fit your interests and time schedule. Also, I’ve met my best friends on SAB. I came to UK not knowing anyone, and SAB gave me a home and made this huge campus much smaller. Although my time as Director of Media is coming to an end very soon, I will carry those friendships forever, and I hope more students can get involved and get as much out of SAB as I have.

HC: How can UK students learn more about SAB at the university?
EB: Visit our social media sites! Our Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat usernames are all UKSAB, and our Facebook page is UK Student Activities Board! We have a brand-new, really awesome website, uksab.org. You can also stop by the office and say “hello!” We are always so excited to talk to prospective students.
"Sam I am," and I LOVE to read. Whether it's Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice" or The Mortal Instruments series, I'm always reading. And when I'm not reading, I'm writing; English papers, magazine editorials, you name it! Italian food is my favorite, shoe shopping is my addiction, and I hate cold weather. I'm also a proud member of Slytherin house (we're not all bad, I swear).
